Fried food heart risk 'a myth'
The Telegraph ^ | January 25, 2012 | Stephen Adams

They say there is mounting research that it is the type of oil used, and whether or not it has been used before, that really matters.

The latest study, published in the British Medical Journal, found no association between the frequency of fried food consumption in Spain - where olive and sunflower oils are mostly used - and the incidence of serious heart disease.

Another health myth bites the dust. And remember when egg yolks were supposed to increase your cholesterol? So is it okay now to eat movie theater popcorn popped in Coconut oil?

Until next week, or when the Corn oil Lobby sends more money to researchers.

I won’t buy any product that has cottonseed oil in it.

Funny thing is you find cottonseed oil in a lot of cookies, crackers, pies, etc., but I have never found a bottle of cottonseed oil on the store shelves.

Most types of vegetable oil I might agree with, but if you’re still frying with good old lard then I can’t believe it isn’t going to kill you eventually.

Just like in the movie City Slickers when Curly died - “The man ate bacon three meals a day... You just can’t DO that!”

But man does it taste good...

Spaniards have a different diet than Americans. They don’t consume fried foods like Americans do.

Anyone remember the Woody Allen movie “Sleeper?”

Guy is put in suspended animation and wake sup 100 years in the future, when it’s been discovered that the best health foods are alcohol, fatty foods, and cigarettes!

Back in a college physiology class (15 years ago or so), our professor talked at length about cholesterol and it’s interaction in the diet and body, etc. The topic of cholesterol in the diet came up and was discussed at length. Your body will make cholesterol (it’s a hormone) and dispose of cholesterol at its leisure. Your genes have far more to do with the equation than your diet ever did, or could. Overall diet and health (and moreso, genetics) are more meaningful than whether you ate something fried in lard or peanut oil (there is no significant cholesterol in anything that is not from animals anyway, btw).

And don’t even get me started on the “Low fat” garbage. What a crock!

Got 80,000 miles on my F-250 Ford pick up running on 100% veggy oil. It hasn’t gained an ounce and still has lots of heart. What would have cost $14,000 plus to operate on dino diesel only cost $3,000 thanks to soy juice.

I love frying in a Wok. It’s fun because you can be quite creative.

This has been pretty well known for a while. The problem is all the oil that tastes good is bad for you.

I certainly believe that your diet affects your health and that some aspects of the American diet must be bad -- we are getting pretty fat after all. But the competing claims against this or for that are pretty frustrating.

It would seem to me that, by now, scientists would be able to trace the progress of something like trans-fats (just as an example) through the digestive process and follow its entry into the bloodstream determining its ultimate effects on the body.

Instead, it appears, we are subject to a never-ending parade of "studies" which can only -- at best -- find a correlation between the ingestion of a food and the relative health of the population in the study. It's not so much science as statistics.

I don't know. Maybe all the really good scientists have been bought off to study global warming.

...if you’re still frying with good old lard then I can’t believe it isn’t going to kill you eventually.

My mother traded lard for Wesson oil and it killed her...at the age of 94... she was taking her first heart Rx ... that might have killed her.

Cottonseed oil isn’t classified as a food, even though it’s used in lots of processed fried foods.

Because of this they don’t have to comply with all sorts of laws and regulations when growing and using cottonseed oil.

It’s also one of the least healthy oils you can eat anyhow.
But it’s the cheapest oil so they use it all over the place. If the package says “one or more of these oils” bet that it’s 90%+ cottonseed if it is listed

My German great-grandmother ate like...a German (a REAL German, not these sissy-modern style ones), all her life, and lived to be 99. But, her Irish husband, had a heart attack in his twenties (maybe due to her butter-laden German cooking?)

"I won’t buy any product that has cottonseed oil in it."

Then you are making a mistake. Cottonseed oil is one of the healthiest oils there is. You should do some reading on it. The reason that you don't find it on the average grocery store shelf is because it is not cheap or in demand.

You can buy cottonseed oil on Amazon. There are many, many healthy oils that you won't generally find, unless you go to a specialty store or order it online. Avacado, walnut, grapeseed and pecan are just some of them. For the most part, people use those in salad dressing because of the wonderful flavors. It is very expensive to deep fry in them, but cottonseed oil is not as expensive.
