This May 8, North Carolina voters will be able to decide the future of marriage in their state.
After a century of Democratic dominance in the North Carolina General Assembly, the 2010 elections ushered in a new Republican majority. In September 2011, the General Assembly approved the amendment in a bipartisan vote.
If you live in North Carolina, be sure to vote in May (early voting starts in late April). Also, be sure to visit voteformarriagenc.com and make a donation or offer to volunteer.
The polls have shown the amendment leading, but there is no guarantee the measure will be approved in a low-turnout primary election. It will take hard work and effort.
The amendment will prevent a court in North Carolina from redefining marriage, as has happened in other states. It will also send a strong message to Congress and the federal courts that the people of this country care about marriage. It may even send a message to Democrats, who are holding their convention in Charlotte.
This is one of those instances when the people can directly vote on an extremely important issue. Let's not miss our opportunity!
Wow, your state is allowing you to vote? I live in Washington State and the legislature here is poised to pass a gay marriage law — that is , allowing gay marriage. I would like to vote on that, but, not being allowed to.
Now you know what it’s like living in Massachusetts....
