U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords will step down from Congress this week to focus on her recovery, her staff announced Sunday. "I have more work to do on my recovery, so to do what is best for Arizona, I will step down this week," Giffords said in a video message. Giffords, a third-generation Arizonan who served five years in the state Legislature before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in November 2006, will not seek re-election this fall. Giffords vowed to return public service. "I will return and we will work together for Arizona and this great country," she said.

I just had a feeling that the media was trying to make her out to be more recovered than she really was.Yes she survived tremendous trauma but from what I’ve seen is still very far from 100% recovered.

Prayers for her health and recovery but since the Rats have destroyed the country it's time for many others to follow her lead.

No, she was liberal, just not liberal enough for the left-wing nutjob who shot her. Liberal but perhaps grounded a bit more in reality because her district wasn’t exactly like Pelosi’s.

The leftard who shot her was most recently pissed at her that she didn’t vote for Pelosi as minority leader.

From a very tough lady.

Best to you Ms. Giffords.

It is the right thing to do albeit a little tardy.

I imagine she was under pressure from fellow democrats to stay in the job.
They would love to use her “victimhood” in upcoming campaigns.

The media will play this as a victory for the hard Right.

Before you leave, make sure that you drive around the state house with a huge Arizona or bust sign. :^D

When will her husband annouce his plans to replace her?

Great minds think alike. I had the same thought when I read the headline.

She needed to step down. She has a wonderful husband who has been by her side through this whole ordeal.

She’s a lucky lady in so many ways.

“She began “serving” in Congress in January, 2007. She just retired...Members who participated in the congressional pension system are vested after five (5) years of service.”

Worth repeating. Many in her district predicted this months ago...

I’m with you.

May God bless and keep her family.

But as a public “servant” she did nothing for her district, her state, her country, her countrymen—she served only herself and her political ilk.

We need a conservative in that seat.

She'll make the perfect rat senatorial candidate someday soon. I don't know much about Giffords, but I know the rats must be wringing their hands at the prospect of using her like a drug thug uses a junkie skank.

Yes, she may have timed her announcement after she became vested, but in this case I wouldn't hold it against her. She was not ousted because of some scandal, she took a bullet to her head while performing her duties for her district. She has a long and expensive recovery ahead of her, and I won't begrudge her and her family trying to secure a plan for her now.

She did the right thing in retiring for herself and her district, and good wishes to her.

Am wondering if the timing could have anything to do with the Congress retirement benefits program and being in office for the length of time necessary to qualify to “retire”.

I think you have to serve five years to be vested in the Congressional Pension Program.

She didn’t design the corrupt system, but she’s obviously not above taking advantage of the corruption.

She was the target of an assassination attempt while performing her official duties. I don’t begrudge her being given a pension any more than I do a veteran who is wounded in the line of duty.

Shame on you
