GREENVILLE, S.C. After Texas Gov. Rick Perry bowed out of the presidential race last week, his senior campaign leaders in South Carolina set to work closing down the three campaign offices, collecting yard signs and dismantling staff.
But their most important assignment from Perry, said state campaign chairman Katon Dawson, was to go to work immediately to help former House Speaker Newt Gingrich in his battle to upset former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in the states critical first-in-the South primary.
Perrys decision to drop out of the race and endorse the former speaker helped contribute to Gingrichs decisive victory in the Palmetto State, although the exact degree was still being determined as results continued to come in Saturday.
Gingrich called Perry after his victory and later told supporters that Perry was very generous in extending his endorsement.
His passion is implementing the 10th Amendment, Gingrich said of his former adversary-turned-supporter. Were going to work with him to return power to the states to local governments and get it out of Washington, D.C.
All but one of the 22 state officials who endorsed Perry early in his campaign transferred their loyalty to Gingrich after Perry pulled out of his race and bestowed his remaining South Carolina political capital on Gingrich. Dawson, a former state GOP chairman, and other political heavyweights formerly aligned with Perry worked their contacts to help marshal support for Gingrich.
In a statement after the primary, Perry congratulated Gingrich on his big win in South Carolina and described him as the conservative standard-bearer in the Florida primary and beyond.
Newt Gingrich is the conservative change agent we need to contrast, debate and defeat President Obama in November, said Perry.

I really hope Perry is VP.
That was a very classy thing for Perry to do. I wish him well in all his endeavors.
I think Perry’s a lot like Gingrich. They both realize that zero (or his handlers) has taken the political game to a new level and if they don’t do something even their necks are on the line. Literally. The left has lost control of themselves.
Or President Gingrich could appoint him as head of the EPA.
BTW, current delegate count is 33-25 Romney. If Newt wins Florida’s 9, suddenly he vaults into 1st place, 34-33.
Then Big Media needs to change their underwear.
Rick Perry had strong evangelical and military supporters. I’m sure they went to Gingrich, and I have no doubt that those who were already in Gingrich’s camp became more enthusiastic supporters of Newt’s with Gov. Perry’s backing.
btw — I’ve alerted the mod to correct the source as “Boston Herald.
The K-Street to Wall Street racket needs to crumble.
Gingrich addressed re-tooling government and returning power to the states. This is straight out of Perry's playbook.
My take on this is that the Boston Globe is trying to get around the fact that Newt won by givin Perry the credit for it.
Their interest is in making Newt look like he wouldn’t have won without the endorsement.
That’s really cool of Perry. Much respect for him.
I like how Newt is starting to bring together all the big conservative ideas under a single banner. Perry’s main theme has been states rights, and Newt has brought him to the team. I also notice that Newt has been talking about sound money a lot lately too, which is Ron Paul’s big theme.
Bump!
I hope all those on FR who derided Perry will come to see what a hard working, wonderful American Patriot he is.
Perry has class, without a doubt.
The media seem to want to pick the candidate...Ya think??
No wonder Obama is going to church.
I see a very bright future for Rick in the Gingrich Administration. I would love to see him as our Secretary of Defense, or Dept of Homeland Security (Border Fence, troop guards, etc,)
If nothing else, the debate would be entertaining. Difficult to know who would say something dumber between him and Biden.
Romney’s been well-entrenched there, but I think Newt’s momentum will blow them out of their trenches. So at least for now, whatever lead Romney has had will diminish quite a bit. Then it’s back to slogging it out.
I think it's best to set our expectations very low in Florida. The advance voting/absentee ballot is huge in Florida and a week and a half ago Romney was the annointed one.
I'm sure Newt has a diary with all his picks already....
But we need to listen to Newt...We need BOTH houses and the White House to get anything done. It means getting the vote out!!! We need a landslide!!
CORRECTION: Florida has 50 delegates, not 6, even with the 50% penalty the RNC imposed on the state. And, they are awarded winner-take-all, so if Newt wins Florida, he picks up 50 delegates, not 6.
Few here derided the good Governor. They simply pointed out why they did not think he could win. Most did not run him down in a personal way, (Some did of course) but most still respected his record and did not take that away from him. It was Rick's public image that hurt him most. Nobody can deny that fact. It's why he could not get himself out of the single digits, in spite of several stellar debate performances. He sure did try very hard, and is a hard working and tremendous man. I hold the highest respect for him and always will.
Perry's calling has yet to happen, so with his association with Newt, the future for all of us will be bright indeed. Especially with men like Rick in the Gingrich Administration and other Washington outsiders, which in turn, will turn the Washington Elite RINO’s out on the street for good.
This trend will continue now, the GOPE have lost their death grip and they have great fear that they are powerless to stop it. We need to unite and help Newt, Rick and company make that happen!
“If Newt wins Floridas 9, suddenly he vaults into 1st place, 34-33.”
Are you sure Florida only has 9 delegates? It seems like they should have a lot more than that, unless they’re being penalized for moving up their primary.
What segment of the Republican Primary voting population is it that is so attracted to Romney?
I already am calling our victory in SC as a Landslide.
I think that after Newt gets National exposure, he will win in a Landslide resembling the second Reagan Term. At least, I hope so.
“We need to unite and help Newt, Rick and company make that happen!”
I am fully behind Newt now, but I still can’t help wishing Perry would have waited a couple months and been fully prepped with his A campaign team in place before jumping in. For me, it’s a personal preference I guess. I see Newt & Perry as basically the same from a policy standpoint, but it’s just tough for me to overlook all of Newt’s baggage-not the personal stuff, but his flirtations with the Eisenhower wing of the party.
But that’s all water under the bridge now. As tough as it is for me to accept, you’re right in saying Perry hasn’t found his true calling yet. I really hope he is as deeply involved with Newt’s administration as is being reported.
Perry and Newt both sticking it to The Establishment!
That was a very classy thing for Perry to do. I wish him well in all his endeavors.

Indeed. The cause is bigger than the man ... which paradoxically makes the man bigger.
Everything from the EPA's trying to shut down our power supply, to DOJ's unnecessary interference in congressional redistricting, to ignoring requests for disaster funds after wildfires, and more, the Feds seem determined to kill Texas' economy and interfere in everything possible in the state.
Perry understands why we have to win this election in a way that not everyone does. It's not an abstract idea for him.
Perry and Gingrich both share a hatred for Mitt Romney.
Romney plays dirty and his speech last night was not gracious, but full of anger.
Santorum does not like Romney, either.
The Tea Party and conservatives are uniting on one side against the moderate GOP, the MSM and Mitt Romney on the other.
This battle has just begun and we MUST win to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States of America!
We were ready to vote for Perry, sad as it was to have him drop out, when yesterday morning arrived we supported Newt.
I’m in Oklahoma, so I pay close attention to what happens in TX. Hate to say it but it’s a race issue with zero. It’s obvious but no one will outright say it. He uses white people, I doubt he likes any of them. His mother is the template of white weakness. White guilt, while stupid, is alive and well. And killing us.
Secretary of Defense. He nipped that crap about the marines peeing on the dead guy in the bud. Passionately explained the true definition of despicable.

This site is handy to get stats and info on the primary numbers and rules.
Perry’s supporters worked hard, not so much for Newt, but for AMERICA. God bless them.
And, yes, Newt is embracing all those ideas of the other candidates which resonate with the American people. His victory speech last night was brilliant.
C’mon, Florida. You know in your heart that Newt is the only man who can defeat Obama and restore our country. Give him a big victory and keep the wave building.
And how about NOT placing one of the retired space shuttles on display in Texas?
One goes on display at Kennedy in Florida... OK.
But the other two plus the Enterprise, go to Virginia, New York and California?
Right...
NEWT/RICK in ‘12!!!
Sound good?
NEWT/RICK in ‘12!!!
Sound good?
It really shows what a class act Perry is and I’m sure he will have a top spot in the administration should Newt win.
Now if we can just get Santorum to do the sane/same thing.
Rombama must be defeated.
CW I was so sorry to see Perry leave the race, he really is a great
man, but of course you already know that!!!!!! God speed, I know how
difficult it must have been to see him leave the race, the people of
Texas however will get to keep their GREAT governor.
Now we move on and adopt Perry’s plan:

Make what Americans buy.
Buy what Americans make..
and sell it to the world!
My hats off to Rick Perry and company for understanding the real threat(romney)and throwing in with Newt.Santorum needs to get on board as well.Hope he sees the light soon.
Good man.
My hat is off to you.
Through all the stuff, that I and others have thrown at you, you have remained strong, and positive and I commend you and will do your dishes for a week.
Perry did a smart thing and is a class act and I thank him.
I've become a Newtster, not like I was a Sarah guy nor even a Cain Train rider, but here we are.
I picked up a neat way to donate small amounts and do it more often, with Cain I was donating $ 9.99 very often and now with Newt I'm doing $20.12 but not quite as often.
I know that’s right but Pres. Bush had both houses and they turned their backs on him. How’s that going to work this time?
Perry’s a good man but I wouldn’t want him at DHS, since he’s committed to letting illegals live in America, without penalty.
You’re full of it.
Perry showed what it means to be a true Texian.
No, I’m not. I was looking forward to supporting Perry when he joined the race, until he started talking about the illegals in his state. He is just like Ron Paul: sounding great on the issues until you bring up their Achille’s heel. For Paul, it’s foreign policy; for Perry, it’s illegal immigration.
Perry is a very good man and good on the issues who just couldn’t articulate them clearly enough. He showed that he is a quality man by the way he has conducted himself when he realized he wasn’t going to win.
Hats off to Rick P.
I can now tell you that you have been a valiant defender of Perry. While I could never have supported him for the reasons I articulated I will give you credit for being a brave and loyal supporter.
