From Public Policy Polling, this is really bad news for Rick Perry -- although at this point it cannot be unexpected:
Rick Perry's Presidential campaign is doing about as bad in Texas now as it is everywhere else in the country. When PPP last polled the state in September he was at 49%, leading Mitt Romney by 39 points. Now Perry's support has declined by 31 points, leaving him in 3rd place at 18%. Mitt Romney at 24% and Newt Gingrich at 23% lead the way with Rick Santorum at 15%, Ron Paul at 12%, and Buddy Roemer at 0% rounding out the field behind Perry.
What might be most shocking on this poll is that Romney edges Perry 46-45 if Republican voters had to pick just between the two of them. When we asked that identical question four monhs ago Perry led Romney 72-18. There's been a 55 point shift in Romney's direction.

FWIW, I find Rick Perry more entertaining than Ron Paul. And far more sane.
Curious about your guys’ opinions on this!
Perry’s been done for a long time. I was astonished he didn’t withdraw. I guess he really wanted to help RINO Romney by splitting the vote. Either that or he really is as stupid as he comes across.
I’m amazed at the continuing concerted effort to get Perry out of this race. As Rush said, liberals will tell you who they’re afraid of.
Perry is polling so low that I don’t think he hurts anyone else in the race. He is a non-factor.
He really is as stupid as he comes across though.
I have been thinking about it for awhile now ... and I have come to the conclusion that Perry stayed in to gain experience with debating for another run in 2016 where he will be the next in line.
This is one of the most astounding examples of self-delusion I've ever seen.
Personally, I'm amazed at the continuing concerted effort by Perry to get Perry out of this race.
As a Texan, this is not surprising. Two elections back he got only 39% of the vote in a four-person field. Perry is the default candidate here - if he ever had a decent opponent, he’d be gone in the primary.
Remember the Alamo?...
I supported Perry, but it does look like he’s near the end of the road.
Perry won the debate last night...it’s no where near the end of the road yet.
60% of those polls said they approve of Perry’s performance as Governor.
polls = polled

Yep.
Romney’s the pick in my beloved home state??
What’s the world coming to!
And Mitt’s the pick in SC and FL.
There would be your story.
Just a guess, but for those who might say they won’t vote for Rick who were formerly supportive, they might be sick of him casting the pearls of Texas before the swine who prefer to ignore what he and we have wrought here, and would prefer he stop and come back home.
That said, there’s no excuse for a plurality of Texas Republicans to pick Romney.
That would say far more about what is wrong with them than it would say about Perry.
Just like the misplaced glee in your post, along with your missing the key story of Romney surging among southern Republicans, says more about you than anyone else...
Newt won the debate last night, but Perry did very well. Too bad we didn’t see this Perry early on.
PPP was around long before they did any polling for Daily Kos, and they are on average an accurate pollster (the fact that they had Perry leading overwhelmingly back when they originally polled TX should clue you into that).
Perry is the best candidate. Took second only to Newt last night. And I loved when he called the lib press on “despicable” as related to our troops. He’s honest, passionate, and the man I’d like to see as our President. But he continues to get hammered as unelectable, the stupid flip-side of Romney being electable.
How did we get here?
I just gave you mine, although you didn’t ping me.
The story is that Romney is ahead across the south.
In polls.
If that’s true, and holds true, we are all in a world of hurt.
Your take is your usual.
And we all know what that means.

How did we get here?
So why do so many on FR seem to think he’s the Second Coming? Or Third Coming, I guess, since Obama already took that title...
Romney is only ahead because the conservatives are splitting the vote. Naturally, he’ll only be beaten once Perry and one of Santorum/Gingrich drop out. That’s not new info.
Perry won’t even be in the hunt anymore by the time Texas has its primary.
This poll just shows me that Texans have bought into the media’s Perry is not electable meme. His 60% approval rating does not transfer to votes because they have been told over and over he can’t beat Obama which is completely untrue. I’m just not seeing what you find humorous about the media leading GOP voters over a cliff with Romney?
Perry is more stable than RP!!!
The problem as I see it is all the candidates have swelled heads and think they can win. None think the end is near even when they are losing!

Perry also called conservatives “heartless”. Who gives a crap?
The man is not presidential material.
Polls are for strippers.
Liberals like PAConservative have been working hard to that end...it’s not over yet though !
From your lips to God's ears. I really felt like Perry was our only real choice last night, the only one who can win and keep his word.
Who’s Buddy Roemer? And why is his name in the poll?
True. This poll just confirms what most Texas conservatives know and feel about Perry. He's a wet fingered wind sock puppet surrounded by his team of cronies to feed him homespun sound bites.
Great message (the federalism part, anyway), flawed messenger. Sigh.
Rick Perry is in last place, the only candidate in single digits.
He's not in the hunt now nor has he been for months.
Not long ago, Newt led these polls, before that, Cain, before that, Perry.
The big picture is that Romney wasn’t getting a plurality in the southern states. Split vote and all...there were poll leaders and they weren’t named Mitt.
THat appears to have changed.
That truth hurts us all; it hurts Conservatives; it hurts America.
Perry has a double burden...he’s off running for President and not doing very well, therefore Texans could well take a dim view of that.
Which would help both Newt and Santorum among those who know better than to vote Romney, to poll as high as they do compared to their own Governor.
But that Romney has moved up this much in the southern tier is highly disturbing.
"Buddy Roemer at 0%"
Yep. Can't help but chuckle at that.
Well that's only because they didn't go down to .00000001% of the vote in their tally.
Otherwise he'd be right in there :^)
Agreed he’s currently not in the hunt. Allow me to clarify ... he wont be actively campaigning when we get our chance to vote ... won’t even be on the ballot.
But the Perry clingers will continue to ride him until they all collectively go broke trying to keep this zombie campaign alive.
“How did we get here?”
Everything’s upside down, isn’t it? Conservatives flocking to Romney despite the fact that he is a liberal with blood on his hands-—after the Tea Party success of 2010! And people here taking gleeful pleasure in tearing apart a solid conservative Christian. Disagreement is one thing-—but the pack mentality, the yapping and screeching like packs of hyenas toward ONE OF OUR OWN is absolutely inexplicable to me.
I have a theory, and it’s only my personal one. The country is in moral collapse; I believe God may have abandoned us to ourselves, and to the leaders we deserve.
“But that Romney has moved up this much in the southern tier is highly disturbing.”
You can say that again. All along I thought Romney didn’t have a prayer here in the South. What I’m seeing is knocking me for a loop. I wonder if this country is beyond redemption.
Kinky Friedman?
The sign it's beyond redemption is if Obama wins Texas in the general. Then, we're there... it's over.
The whole reason the Republcian establishment is promoting Romney as our candidate, is that he can attract liberal Democrats who will not support a Communist like Obama.
What you are seeing in the polls, and who are voting in these open primaries, are not just Republicans but Democrats.
