Andrew Sullivan: How Obama's Long Game Will Outsmart His Critics
http://www.thedailybeast.com ^ | 1/16/12

"On the economy, the facts are these. When Obama took office, the United States was losing around 750,000 jobs a month. The last quarter of 2008 saw an annualized drop in growth approaching 9 percent. This was the most serious downturn since the 1930s, there was a real chance of a systemic collapse of the entire global financial system, and unemployment and debt—lagging indicators—were about to soar even further. No fair person can blame Obama for the wreckage of the next 12 months, as the financial crisis cut a swath through employment.

The job collapse bottomed out at the beginning of 2010, as the stimulus took effect. Since then, the U.S. has added 2.4 million jobs. That’s not enough, but it’s far better than what Romney would have you believe, and more than the net jobs created under the entire Bush administration. In 2011 alone, 1.9 million private-sector jobs were created, while a net 280,000 government jobs were lost. Overall government employment has declined 2.6 percent over the past 3 years. (That compares with a drop of 2.2 percent during the early years of the Reagan administration.) To listen to current Republican rhetoric about Obama’s big-government socialist ways, you would imagine that the reverse was true.

The right claims the stimulus failed because it didn’t bring unemployment down to 8 percent in its first year, as predicted by Obama’s transition economic team. Instead, it peaked at 10.2 percent. But the 8 percent prediction was made before Obama took office and was wrong solely because it relied on statistics that guessed the economy was only shrinking by around 4 percent, not 9. Remove that statistical miscalculation (made by government and private-sector economists alike) and the stimulus did exactly what it was supposed to do.

On foreign policy, the right-wing critiques have been the most unhinged. Romney accuses the president of apologizing for America, and others all but accuse him of treason and appeasement. Instead, Obama reversed Bush’s policy of ignoring Osama bin Laden, immediately setting a course that eventually led to his capture and death. And when the moment for decision came, the president overruled both his secretary of state and vice president in ordering the riskiest—but most ambitious—plan on the table. He even personally ordered the extra helicopters that saved the mission. It was a triumph, not only in killing America’s primary global enemy, but in getting a massive trove of intelligence to undermine al Qaeda even further. If George Bush had taken out bin Laden, wiped out al Qaeda’s leadership, and gathered a treasure trove of real intelligence by a daring raid, he’d be on Mount Rushmore by now. But where Bush talked tough and acted counterproductively, Obama has simply, quietly, relentlessly decimated our real enemies, while winning the broader propaganda war. Since he took office, al Qaeda’s popularity in the Muslim world has plummeted.

Under Bush, new policies on taxes and spending cost the taxpayer a total of $5.07 trillion. Under Obama’s budgets both past and projected, he will have added $1.4 trillion in two terms."

So I guess I just imagined that the national debt increased by 4 trillion in the last three years. Hell, it went up another trillion in just the last 5 months. Maybe it's the new math practiced by sausage smokers that I don't get.

This 750,000 per month job loss number is so bogus. That was the value for December, 2008, the last month of the Bush Presidency.

But the total for 2008 was NOT 750,000 times 12.

Yet the media and the Democrats (same thing) keep making this claim.

The truth is - these were the first months of the newly elected Obama administration.

Most companies knew they were facing enormous uncertainties from the incoming Democrats, so they refused to hire new employees.

Blaming this on Bush is just so wrong, yet the media and the Dems do it all the time and no one corrects them!

Isn’t he the gay guy who keeps claiming Sara Palin’s baby was really her daughter’s...who was pregnant with her own child?

I did not know NEWSWEAK even published anymore. I remember reading they were sold for one dollar.

Even my Dentist’s office doesn’t keep this rag on its reading table any longer.

“Under Obama’s budgets..”

The Kenyan lizard has never passed a budget. duh So projections of past and future budgets is a joke. The Kenyan’s occupier scum are desperate to dress up the economic data.

A common meme on the left is that they have superior intelligence than the rest of us. The best retort is to point the disastrous consequences of liberalism. 50,000,000 dead babies is one.

Why Are Obama's Critics So Dumb?

Why are Snoozeweak writers so gay?

I love how good ol' Andy conveniently omits the amount of workers that have been totally eliminated from the statistic when he talks about the 2.4 million jobs that were allegedly created. This dope uses the Regime approved statistics and goes no deeper than that.

This is 100% BS. The question needs to again be, “are you better off today that you were three years ago?”

Gasoline is double, U3 unemployment is up 2%, actual unemployment has risen even more, millions have left the job market, food prices are rising rapidly, record numbers of foodstamps are being handed out, the nation is more divided then in any time during my life, we are almost $6 trillion deeper in debt, a hated socialist Obamacare has been shoved at us, Social Security and Medicare are now going broke, GDP is anemic, liberal agenda has infected the military, we are smothered in scandals and many more are being covered up, Porkulus was a total failure, crony capitalism runs amuck.....

The guy is so dumb he works for a company worth only $1. When Obamalamadingdong took over the unemployment rate was 4.5% and the national debt was at 1.4T. And that debt was incurred by the Democrats in the last two years of the Bush admin.

Hey guys! Rather than dump on the publication and make fun of the writer, why don’t we productively provide the talking points to counter this stuff? That is what a good conservative web site should be doing. After all, these are the talking points that Obama will be using later this year. We might as well stoke up our side so that none of us is caught flat-footed.

For instance, we should point out that unemployment figures produced by the government are only valid during the early stages of a recession. Once it has gone on this long, the government starts to exclude those who have dropped off the roles and are no longer even looking for work. Fox News is estimating actual current unemployment at ~15%. Others put it as high as 18%.

Not only did employers demur in hiring new employees as soon as Obama was elected, the government heaped uncertainty into the mix by passing Obamacare whose provisions were not even explained by the administration even after passage. How can business expect to extend employment to people in the face of unknown costs?!
