Oil exports provide half of Irans’s government revenue.

While closing the Strait of Hormuz, even briefly, would hurt Saudi Arabia, Iraq and other Gulf oil exporters, the Saudis also ship oil via the Red Sea.

All of Iran’s exports and many of its imports of gasoline, food and consumer goods are shipped through the strait.

So, shut down the Strait of Hormuz and Iran has no money, no gas, no jet fuel, no diesel fuel, no food and no goods coming in.

Hummmm...

Iran also pizzes off all of it's OPEC neighbors for causing such an inconvenience.

Again, hummm...

Aside from a temporary bump in gas and oil (no, I don't believe that $150.00 bbl much less the 200.00 bbl crap) it is difficult to see the downside here.

If Iran really believes that is the way to go, the United States Navy is going to push a few buttons, launch a few aircraft and a significant portion of Iran's Navy will go the way of a fart in a hot tub. Gross and smelly for a few seconds, then things go back to normal.

The Kilo's might take a day or two longer...

.

We or somebody else could easily destroy their sole oil refinery. That will send gas prices soaring in the winter time. Take out some power generation and desalination facilities and you’d have an Iran that is suffering.

How about drilling for our own oil?

No, that would hurt the carribou, who thrive thanks to the pipeline. And the Indians in Alaska would get upset, except for the ones who would benefit, and it would make too much strategic sense, so La Obamba will have none of it.

I ahve been trying to down load an article posted about a week ago regarding secret work at a plant in CT and in remarks included pictures of a spy space camera system used to take pictures of USSR. I was involved militarily in operating this device in the early 70s. I would like to down load these pictures for my diary. Any help will be apprecated

Iran can make just about all of that at home, and already does make most of it.

I remembered the discussion of the launching of that ship the other day, so I just did a google search for a photo.

If it’s no longer secret, you might try using google or another search engine to find the information in question, putting in a few relevant words such as the name of the plant or the town. I don’t know if you’d come up with anything or not, but it’s about all I can suggest. Try different words, or shuffling them around. There’s not much stuff directly from the early 70s, but it might be in some sort of historical summary. Or you might find their website if they’re still in business.

Betcha they can't make new friends from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, UAE and Kuwait at home.

We can sink a few of their boats but an attempt on their part to close the Strait will cause "issues" with the neighbors.

We, on the other hand, will once again be the "good guys" by restoring cash flow and business as usual. .

And then drop in crates of small arms and a few SO “advisors. This will take care of itself pretty darned quick. And then we will see oil drop 35% in a month. That would be a big plus for the economy.

Then all we need to do is zap that idiot down south with a few more gamma rays and all will be right in the oil world.

Quite true. After the long, hard slog of not just defeating Iran, but stopping their export of terror and threats to shipping, the US will be the good guys and loudly cheered throughout the Persian Gulf, from Saudi Arabia to the newly liberated Iran, and this being the Middle East, that good will might last a few years, until they notice that Israel is still around, outperforming them economically despite their oil wealth, refusing to be dhimmes, and thereby causing them to lose face. Then they’ll start remembering the pore palis again, and press reset.

OK. Those would be ten years well spent. What an idiotic argument. Was that made by Hill, Bill, or both?

Because we didn’t want Iran partitioned between US/USSR/Iraq and possibly WWIII starting there.

RR may have joked about WWIII but, he was carefull not to let things get out of hand.

The unofficial agreement with the USSR from 1979 on was that if we went to war with Iran they would re-occupy the north while we took the south. We did not want the USSR to have a border with their treaty ally Iraq - that would have put the USSR in position to take the entire GCC.

Mercy had nothing to do with it...

Nit: There is an export pipeline thru Turkey.

But, yes most of it is piped to ships at Kharg Island and then out thru the SoH.

Given Turkey’s position in NATO, that would probably also close. Turks and Iranians are in competition for domination of the region.

I don’t know enough about the rest of it. I DO know that they basically have one facility that produces gasoline and their desalination plants are concentrated. If the refinery is taken out along with a few water plants (cogeneration electric actually) then they start hurting real bad real quick. I think highly of our SF guys but have no clue how quickly Iran would fall to revolution.
