A war with Iran will immediately launch oil above $200/barrel, sinking the US economy, leading to more calls for the Federal Govt to do something. Rather than being there to defend against Irn, who is to say they are not there to suppress and attack by Israel. Something like, “Hey, Israel, you’re not going to attack Iran, ever. To make you feel a little better, we’ll put some guys over there to maybe shoot down some missiles if they head your way.”
