China's biggest airlines warned on Thursday they will refuse to pay a new EU tax aimed at cutting carbon emissions.
Beijing said it has deep concerns over the EU's Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), which came into force on New year's Day and demands all airlines pay a green duty to offset carbon emissions.
"China opposes the European Union's unilateral legislation. China has expressed to the EU our deep concern and opposition many times on a bilateral level," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said. …
"The CATA, on behalf of Chinese airlines, is strongly against the EU's improper practice of unilaterally forcing international airlines into its ETS," CATA spokesman Cai Haibo said.
"If governments like the US, China and Russia can launch strong and forceful retaliatory measures, this will form enormous pressure and we hope could make the EU to change its mind." …
The European Commission has assessed the impact on air fares at between €2 to €12 per passenger.
But the Chinese airlines' association said if its members agreed to pay the charge, it will cost them £79 million in the first year alone with estimated costs tripling by 2020. …

I’m still trying to figure out how paying money “offsets” carbon in the atmosphere especially when it already comprimises a zero point zero percentage such as CO2 which only makes up 0.04%. If they “offset” it anymore to 0.02% plants start dying then all life except for Al Gore because he is a God. What do they do, send up trillions of carbon eating nanobots? Do they join togther and make a salute sign and say “Reporting for duty” like John Kerry before they start?

Yes they have. The EU’s top court, the so-called “Court of Justice” ruled against the USA already (back before Christmas) in a suit brought to stop the airline carbon tax.
