BOSTON (MarketWatch) -- The Bahrain-based U.S. Fifth Fleet said it will not allow Iran to disrupt oil shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, Reuters reported Wednesday. "The free flow of goods and services through the Strait of Hormuz is vital to regional and global prosperity," said a fleet spokesman quoted by Reuters. "Anyone who threatens to disrupt freedom of navigation in an international strait is clearly outside the community of nations; any disruption will not be tolerated," the spokesman added. Iranian officials have repeatedly said they would close the Strait of Hormuz to oil traffic if the U.S. and its Western allies proceed with the imposition of sanctions on Iran's oil industry. The proposed sanctions are the result of growing concern among Western nations that Iran has been covertly developing nuclear weapons.

But why aren’t the other nations pitching in? Europe, Japan, India and China. We do the heavy lifting for others.

Perhaps Iran WILL make a move on this. History has a way of repeating itself.

Will Iran be the downfall of this president as it was with Jimmah Carter?

I guess I am old.

I am tired of Iran. Every 10 years they want to be something.

I wish they would go away.

You answered your own question. That last thing you said explains the first. They don't have to because we have for so long.

Shutting off oil shippments has already had an impact even though it has yet to happen. Gasoline prices have jumped by 10 cents per gallon TODAY, now we wait till tomorrow for another jump.

There was a thread a couple days ago that due to budget cuts England has only one warship remaining on active duty in home waters. They quite literally have nothing left to send. The French navy is, French. The JMSDF (I wish they would just go back to IJN) is a top notch butt kicker, but constitutionally prohibited from operating outside home waters.

The Indians or the PLAN could clear the strait with little problem, but neither wants to see the other one operating in such a critical area. Think of how we would have reacted to the Russian fleet operate off the Panama Canal during the cold war.

Yes, but Obama would. And by the way, what would Ron Paul's position be on this?

I don’t trust any of the mentioned countries with keeping the seas clear for international commerce.

If Iran cut off the Persian Gulf oil to China, they might make a more permanent response than we ever would consider.

“If Iran cut off the Persian Gulf oil to China, they might make a more permanent response than we ever would consider.”For all it’s bluster, China lacks the ability to project power beyond it’s own borders. However, this is changing fast, won’t be too many years before they will be able to do so. China is currently developing a deep water navy, carriers, etc. Definitely on the move...

From your keyboard to God’s ear. China needs to start punching their weight. The Iranians would rue the day they were born if the Chinese hoards (world’s largest army?) showed up on their border.

And should Iran decide to “test fire” one of its nukes — in the middle of the 5th Fleet — won’t that be an eye-opener?
