The second term of Jimmy Carter is going about as well as the first one. From Gallup: “PRINCETON, NJ — Throughout 2011, an average of 17% of Americans said they were satisfied with the way things are going in the United States. That is the second-lowest annual average in the more than 30-year history of the question, after the 15% from 2008. Satisfaction has averaged as high as 60% in 1986, 1998, and 2000.”
What does this mean?
Expect more cries of racism by Eric Holder and other incompetents.
Expect more cries of sexism by Babs Boxer and other nincompoops.
Expect more cries of income inequality from Paul Krugman and other hypocrites.

In 1980, Ronald Reagan was not yet Ronald Reagan as we know him. He was derided by the left, media and RNC faithful just as conservatives are today. I agree, we don’t have Ronald Reagan, but we have plenty of good people that carry the torch and are far superior than the current officeholder. It doesn’t take a Reagan to beat a failed president. It takes a clear alternative. We have that in the race.
I think you’re confusing 1980 with 1984 and Massachusetts with Minnesota. In 1984 only Minnesota went to Mondale. In 1980, Carter won Minnesota, Georgia (for obvious reasons), West Virginia, Maryland, Hawaii, and Rhode Island. But admittedly the 1980 election was much more of a blow-out than pollsters expected.
The problem is, that in 2012 we have tens of millions more Democrats than we did in 1979. The birth rates of traditional Democrats such as Latinos, arabs, asians, blacks, as well as 30 million more new poor unskilled uneducated immigrants from third world counties.
Another group that has increased substantially since the 1979 election is the ever increasing numbers of government employees, and the increasing number of people on government welfare such as people getting unemployment checks for 2 years, 50 million people on food stamps, 20 million people getting monthly checks from SSI and SSDI, 90% of college students who want government aid and government loans, and all the other government dependent people who will vote to keep those checks coming.
It will be a miracle if obama does not win by getting a ton of votes from these ever expanding ever increasing Democrat voting blocks.

Save one. Mitt Romney is NOT a "clear alternative". He can't seem to find anything wrong with Obamacare. And he expressly intends to continue the Gays in the Military policy.

I can't stand Mitt or Newt, but I'd still vote for them over BO. Someone that I agree with 80% of the time, is better than someone I agree with 0% of the time.
Other (serious) candidates would be eminently adequate, as well. Well, maybe except for Ron Paul because he's a frickin' lunatic.

But, if he gets the nomination - something that I'm hoping doesn't happen - I'll still vote for him. Not because I like his policies, but because Obama's will be eminently worse. In this particular case, I'm certain that the Devil I Know (BO) is much, much more dangerous than the Devil I Don't.
I felt the same way about McCain. In 2008, we had a choice between a far left Democrat bent on destroying the country, and a center-left Democrat, who, frankly, I wasn't sure of WHAT he stood for. So, I chose McCain, over the guy who was bent on destruction.
One positive that I'd take from Romney, is that he's too worried about which way the wind is blowing. So long as things keep blowing conservative in the country, he'll probably stay on a short leash.
The best thing about McCain in 2008, is that if he died in his first year of office, then Palin would have inherited the Presidency.
