RAMALLAH, West Bank: Thousands of Arab Palestinians took to the streets in Israel to protest a mosque bill that will ban muezzins from using loudspeakers to call the faithful to prayers.
Sami Abu Shihadeh, the Arab member of Yaffa (Jaffa) municipal council, said the residents held the protests in his city and Umm Al-Fahem, Shafa’amr, Baqah Al-Gharbiyeh, Tarsheeha, Al-Taybeh, Nazareth, Negev and Al-Teireh against the bill, proposed by Knesset member Anastasia Michaeli of rightist Yisrael Beiteinu party.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu plans to bring the bill to a vote by his Cabinet on Sunday after he failed to muster enough support to pass it at a session last week. Explaining his backing for the bill, Netanyahu said there was “no need to be more liberal than Europe,” in an apparent reference to the 2010 Swiss law that forbids mosques from having minarets.
If approved, the new law would ban loudspeakers from all mosques in Israel.

I'm glad you think so. Now let's hear your thoughts on the fact that churches are banned in many Muslim countries (including Saudi Arabia). Not just a call to prayer... the whole other religion. Would you consider that "fair"?
Not at all. So if Muslim countries are unfair to their citizens then that somehow gives Israel the right to be unfair its citizens? That's some kind of logic.
This article is in error. The bill relates only to the first and last calls to prayer, which can be as early as 4:30 in the morning and 10:00 in the evening during the summer.
During the day, when the ambient noise is greater, the calls to prayer aren't a problem. In recent months, a number of mosques upgraded their sound systems to a level that the noisiest discotheques would be proud of, and play the call to prayer at full volume.
Holding others to a higher standard for the sake of principle(at least that’s supposedly the reason, there is more than enough reason to suspect otherwise) is what has gotten the West to its pretty pass in dealing with Islam, because Islam doesn’t play by the same rules. Just as they use American democratic means to chip away at democracy.
I daresay the Israelis, having much longer experience of this than we have, understand that their survival is more important than upholding this particular abstract principle, because it’s suicidal when only one side does it.

i’m speaking of the principle of fairness, as you are. How far should they go with this? They seem to believe it’s in their best interests to be “unfair”, and I think they’re the best judges of that.
Yes, I know about Tripoli, enslavement, etc. It’s not the same thing that the Israelis are dealing with, since their resumption as a nation.

Hardly. The Israelis aren’t sending suicide bombers , including the mentally retarded, amongst civilians in order to kill them. They’re not getting the world’s support (including a sickening Nobel “Peace” prize for a terrorist murderer) as they promise repeatedly to annihilate a whole people. The Israelis aren’t sending men to American flight schols where they don’t need to learn to land a plane because they intend to kill themselves and every innocent passenger and 3000 innocent civilians.
