J.C. Watts, Jr. a former Republican congressman, is expected to endorse Newt Gingrich for president imminently. NBC News is reporting that Gingrich will secure the former Oklahoma representative's endorsement in an announcement that is likely to be made later today.

Watts was elected to Congress in 1994, becoming the first African-American to win a statewide office in Oklahoma. Gingrich is famously credited with leading Republicans that election year to winning control of the House for the first time in 40 years, according to the New York Times. Gingrich then served as Speaker of the House for four years, although his tenure was mired with scandal.

Watt's political career in Congress extended beyond Newt's brief moment of Republican leadership in the House. During his eight years in Congress, Watts served as the Chairman of the House Republican Conference and on the House Armed Services Committee.

Why isn’t any conservative Senator or Congressman endorsing Rick Santorum?

He’s probably the most consistent conservative of this bunch.

Also, in the debates, why do they keep putting him in the left most side of the podium?

They should rotate their positions in some debates so that Santorum at least gets to stand in the middle once.

The one on the right is on the left, and the one in the middle is on the right and .... oh hell, I forget.

I, for one do. Watts has been a friend of conservative candidates over the years, participated in fundraisers (Sam Brownback when he was running against the RINO establishment in both DC and KS) and others too numerous to mention.

Plus, Newt helped train and elect Watts in the 90s and JC does know of some of Newt's positives. I might also add, he still has a pretty good following from the black electorate and since Cain's out of the game, no reason to kick them down the road (or over to Obama again!)

Post Script: JC got kicked around a lot as well when the Black Caucus in Congress dragged out that he had also had an out-of-wedlock child (only one for a football player, pretty conservative there) and is a committed Christian!

Nice gutsy move by JC. Expect Cain, too. And after Newt squeaks out a win in IA, the floodgates will open with endorsements and cash galore.

Why isn’t any conservative Senator or Congressman endorsing Rick Santorum?

Because endorsements are not born of principles anymore. They are just political favors traded among the ruling class. I am guessing JC got some help in the past from Newt and that is how this came about. I feel they are totally meaningless anymore.

“They are just political favors traded among the ruling class.”

Was there EVER a time when they weren’t?

I don't know the answer there but do know that Rick disappointed many in the conservative ranks in PA when he agreed (actually was pressured by Rove/Bush)to step on stage and "heartily endorse" fellow GOP PA Senator Arlen Specter!

What that did for Santorum was basically put him in the DOA spot to the pro-life conservatives when he ran for reelection against another "pro-life" dimocRAT, Casey.

Nice gutsy move by JC.

For those who need a refresher, here's JC's last "gutsy" move.

Shocking many in the Republican fold, the Associated Press reported over the weekend Watts was thinking of voting for Obama.

Watts was quoted as saying: "I think all of America can take some pride in this (Barack Obama's success in getting the Democratic nomination)."

Asked by Hannity if the McCain campaign had courted him, he said: "I've not talked to anyone."

The former Oklahoma congressman criticized the Republican Party for neglecting the black community. Black Republicans, he said, have to concede that while they might not agree with Democrats on issues, at least that party reaches out to them.

"And Obama highlights that even more," Watts said, adding that he expects Obama to take on issues such as poverty and urban policy. "Republicans often seem indifferent to those things."

They focus on this one mistake he made and then overlook the tons of mistakes Newt makes ( including endorsing Pro-choice, liberal Dede Scazzafava over Doug Hoffman in NY ?).

Talk about being unfair...
