Mitt Romney on Monday dismissed his offer to make a $10,000 bet with Rick Perry as merely "an outrageous number to answer an outrageous charge" _ namely, Perry's claim that Romney made changes to parts of his book.
Romney told Fox News he made the bet offer in the weekend GOP presidential debate because of Perry's erroneous claim that he deleted parts of his book, "No Apology," that referred to Romney's support for a health care mandate. Romney said his bet offer was simply meaningless hyperbole.

And, Perry would win that bet.
$10 grand? By way of comparison, I was talking to my boss about a computer problem last week and jokingly told him "I bet you a quarter this fix works".
I won, but didn't ask him to pay up. :-)

This is just how Rick Perry is. After Hurricane Ike devastated my community, he came here to survey the damage. He did not just walk through here surrounded by security and news cameras and then make a speech. That's not Perry. He showed up in jeans and a work shirt, no cameras, no press conference, and he walked among all of us who had been hit. A hug, a pat on the shoulder, a listening ear, and an encouraging word. He saw to it that emergency shelters were being set up and food and water were available to everyone. When Obama/FEMA refused to help us, Governor Perry set up state funding to help us rebuild our homes and our lives. My home is at 'ground zero' where Ike came ashore. We all took tremendous damage. FEMA sent me a check two months later for $600 dollars. Governor Perry set up the Recovery Fund to help us all rebuild. That is what a true leader and a true Christian does. That's my Governor! I can't wait to see America under the caring wing of Rick Perry.

That's -- I'm running for office, for Pete's sake, I can't have illegals. [video clip]
Fox is so in the tank for Romney - it’s revolting. They are giving Romney an open forum on several Fox programs - to correct all his dumb debate performances.
He makes no substantive comments on his policies or platform - always about his personal self - his parents’ influence on being an American - ??? like sending him to France during VietNam.
CW - respect your Perry support - I would like to see a Newt/Rick ticket. Don’t kill me!!! LOL!!
RINOmney is example two that our top schools are - perhaps -chrome-coated plastic.
The Cretin-in-Chief is, of course, example one.
Can you imagine any real college of the 50s graduating that clown?
Mitt Romney reaches for wife Ann to mop up $10k gaffe ......"After the debate was over. Ann came up and gave me a kiss and said I was great and she said, a lot of things you do well, betting isnt one of them," Romney said in New Hampshire after a town hall meeting, according to POLITICO's Reid Epstein.
Asked if it was the largest bet he's ever made, Romney replied, "Thats all Ive got," and chuckled." [meaning all he had to say on the matter]
“Outrageous number to answer outrageous claim” is a
classic well-crafted response, obviously designed by
Romney’s advisers-—say what they will, that moment was
equivalent to Perry’s brain-freeze about the Departments
he would eliminate. The net results, at least temporary , will be evident in the Iowa primary vote.
As a non-Morman, I am curious, what does the LDS church say about making bets?
Meaningless hyperbole is a quality I always look for in a presidential candidate. It's so very...presidential. < /sarc>
This explanation.....fail!
Romney, what a loser!
I was thinking a Newt/Rick ticket was a real possibility as of yesterday-—then I read that one of Perry’s statements during the debate was a swipe at Gingrich for “cheating”.
Did I misread this quote? It was obviously from the fifteen minutes of the debate I missed. So, in light of that, I can’t see a Gingrich/Perry ticket.
Besides, nobody has change for a $20,000 bill.
I’m with you.
Romney tried to spin it, but let’s face it, ten thou is the bet that came to his mind.
And why does he keep saying Perry is wrong. Is Perry wrong? Haven’t seen it proved.
I could care less that Romney decided to bet $10K with Rick Perry. But I can say without equivocation that his attempt to walk it back and rationalize it is so typically Romney that it merely confirms to me why I will only vote for him if he is the candidate, holding my nose and only because anything is better than 4 more years of Obama.
He’s a venture capitalist. Betting is what venture capitalists do. Maybe not in Vegas, but that may just be that the stakes aren’t high enough. Under that whitebread facade is a gambler, someone who is willing to go all in with an empty hand. Whether that is the kind of person we need as president is another discussion. But for him to hide who he is (even when it leaks out as in this $10K gaffe) is strangely reminiscent of the current occupant of the White House.
That was the first thought that came to my mind. I saw why the bet amount was picked up by the media (Mitt gifted it in his ill-conceived attempt to stop Perry from picking at his mandate scab) but his attempt to blow it off now that it's backfired on him, is yucky.
The press’ reaction to this is telling me that they have changed tactics, and will just pig-pile on everything they can to save Obama. Whoever wins the primary will be the most investigated person in history.
They’re saying Romney is out of touch... have you seen the price of Arugula lately? Those highly paid “news” shills are out of touch.

Won’t kill you, but that wouldn’t happen.
I don’t think Perry would accept a VP nomination. I believe he would consider being governor of Texas a better job. I could be wrong.
I don’t think Perry would choose Newt as veep if he got the nomination. They are just way too different in philosophy.
If he bet the farm, I might respect him more. Would show that he stands for something, at least.
But, again, being wishy-washy wins out.
Somehow, politicians just can’t seem to bring themselves to say “I did state that position, but because of more research, I have determined that position to be incorrect. If you’d like a detailed look at my reasons for changing my mind and the research behind it, go to www.xyz.com”.
I watched the debate but I didn’t see or don’t remember seeing Perry accuse Newt of cheating.
However, I had it DVR’d and tried to fast forward through Diane Sawyer and, in so doing, might have missed something.
If you’re perhaps talking about the marriage vow question the idiot Sawyer advanced, Perry did not mention Newt in his answer, but just explained his own feelings on the matter.
I missed it live too - but it has been repeated on Fox every five minutes.
Rick was baited by Sawyer and took it. However, it got the issue out of the way - Newt handled it with humility and dignity.
Their dynamic is not as friendly as Newt/Herman - but Rick appears to respect Newt’s expertise and Newt needs someone who is not ‘in awe’ but will keep him focused on the areas where they agree and confront him when they don’t.
A Newt-mentored Rick would have a solid resume for 2020.
Good point. I think that is measured in Planck units.

Hmmm - just what Perry did on the Gardasil issue...

I would wager $10,000 that Romney is full of it.
Perry’s not a typical politician.
Typical politicians don’t state their beliefs and say that you can support them or not.
Typical politicians never admit they’re wrong, never admit they changed their mind, and try to figure out what you want to hear and tell you that.
I think we’ve had enough of those.
It is also a good way for the MSM to bury Rick Perry’s great comments on the Middle East and the day Obama gave away our technology to Iran.
I remember. But I do think if he believed the removal of Obama depended on it - he would accept.
Perry doubled down with Chris Wallace yesterday morning stating he stood by his comment. And it sounded to me like Romney in the 1st edition (according to ABC) did state that his individual mandate could be a model for the nation.
I believe the plain intent of Romney early on was that an individual mandate was appropriate at the federal level. If not, why did he remove such a remark? Obviously, he’d never admit as much as he’s going to parse that statement to death a la Slick Willie.
Wanna bet that the 10K bet offer response was a rehearsed thing? You know it was, but it was a bad move because the only way it would have worked to Romney’s advantage was if Rick Perry had actually taken Romney’s hand. Romney’s bet was that Perry was so dumb he would take it, but he didn’t, so Romney lost his bet.
Thanks! I didn’t think it would be something they would approve of, and I bet Mitt wanted to smack himself up aside the head right after the words left his mouth.
The comment by Rick Perry about Newt’s infidelity was in response to a question directed to him about it.
Perry said that if you cheat on your wife, you will cheat on your business partner and that when he (Perry) took his marriage vows, he also made a vow to God, and that vow was even strong than a West Texas handshake. [paraphrased]
The reason a common man bets a beer or ten bucks or a lunch is that he can pay that bet if he loses and he doesn’t think in terms of getting rich with a bet. The reason Milt Rominy bets $10,000 grand is the that he can pay up out of pocket change if he loses. He could hardly think the bet would make him rich if he won, and the amount wouldn’t break Rick Perry, so Milt is yet again just doing a ‘barry obama spin cycle’ ... he’s just a chronic liar and getting spun right out of his magic temple worthy underwear.
On another occasion Mitt said that when he decided to put out the paperback, he did a small re-write that he characterized as normal in those cases -- that there were a few changes and updates made to be current. [paraphrased]
“Mormons do believe that they shouldnt participate or encourage others to gamble.
Abstaining from gambling is not a requirement to...” (what, be a mormon in good standing?)
Question definitely resolved by your 3 google hits.
NO, Perry would NEVER take the VP offer. We need him in Texas to help us fight when the chaos hits. Will not be many safe places when it happens but we here in Texas can rest assured of how Perry will handle it.
Oops. left off sarcasm tag.
Immature.
Mitt bet $10,000 because it was the largest bill in his wallet.
I finally saw the Rick Perry interview on Fox News Sunday this morning at 7 AM.
I thought he did well. Chris Wallace was in one of his nastier gotcha modes ... he is almost unwatchable and the capable Fox crew put Perry facing either the sun or a bright light that was causing him to squint and he didn’t look as good as he usually does, but he still looked good.
Wonder if that was intentional or am I paranoid?
I got in a fight yesterday with a poster I won’t name because he criticized Perry’s performance and his glitch on a Supreme Court member’s name. After watching, I thought he handled it really well.
I don’t have ten thou in my pocket but I feel that Rick Perry must be right about this or Romney would have proven otherwise. He hasn’t.
I see Romney more as guarded and suspicious of others — someone who has been taught that he is an elite but doesn’t believe it in his heart — that maybe if he wins the presidency he can accept that it is true. It’s as if he’s afraid if he slows down his “averageness” will show.
Yeah! That was awful.
