George Bush's Africa AIDS Achievement Big But Ignored
IBD Editorials ^ | December 2, 2011 | Editor

World Health: At a star-studded gala Thursday, President Obama drew big praise from AIDS activists and NGOs for expanding AIDS-fighting programs. But the real accomplishment rests with his predecessor, President Bush.

After quietly helping to save 30 million lives from the scourge of AIDS across the African continent, it would seem that higher honors would be in store for Bush, whose AIDS initiatives there have been an astonishing success.

Obama, to his credit, acknowledged Bush in his World AIDS Day speech Thursday, as have serious-minded Africa advocates including rock singer Bono.

But among the garden-variety NGOs, media elites or activist groups, Bush gets little credit. While President Bush was in Zambia to begin a new effort to save lives on a women's anti-cancer initiative, the increasingly unhinged Amnesty International was busy screeching for Bush's arrest over there for his supposed "war crimes."

The fact remains that Bush saved millions of lives, not just the 50 million Muslims he brought freedom to, but the 30 million Africans he helped to save from AIDS.

He never got recognition for one of the most successful foreign aid initiatives ever, certainly not the Nobel Peace Prize President Obama won for doing nothing in 2009. Bush's accomplishment should be better known.

A decade ago, Africa was literally dying. While the rest of the world advanced through free market reforms in the last two decades, Africa was left out, in no small part because so many of its people were either dying of AIDS or expecting to die. This curse made development or hope in the future nearly impossible.

Bill Clinton recognized it immediately and said, in so many words, that he was jealous

Great, Bush saved Africa with billions of taxpayer’s dollars. He really loved dancing to Bono’s tune.....

Reducing AIDS in Africa was...Bush’s fault.

Bullshit unworthy of IBD. Do they all have to suck up to AIDS-ridden perverts in the media?

Bush spent billions of our hard earned dollars in Africa for little benefit. And the scam artists who define this particular criminal enterprise give him no credit--not that he wasted all our money, but that they didn't get to salt away enough to keep them happy. In short, everybody lost, even the sociopathic homosexuals

Bush hardly defended himself while in the White House so this is no big deal. I have no sympathy for him.

He hasn’t even said one word about what 0bama has done to this country.

Enough said. I don’t want to get banned or whatever they can do.

Seems Bush cares more about what God thanks than the NYTs and the self-serving rats in D.C.

However, he has stood by and said ZERO while zero is destroying this country. He’s abdicated his position as a former POTUS - however, what good would it do if he spoke up? Wouldn’t it just be fodder for endless arguments? Aren’t there enough others who can speak about this more articulately?

I sort of think Bush had a specific mission and that was fulfilled. It’s time for the rest of us to find the person for the next mission.

There is so much irony in your post, after reading your current tag line, I wouldn’t even know where to start except to point out the irony. (and I say this with all due respect unkus)

That disgusting pig didn’t “save” anyone and certainly not with his own money. He was quite generous with OUR tax dollars - to the tune of billions flushed down the toilet for this “cause.” Money which we could have come in handy right about now as there’s talk of gutting our military and our infrastructure crumbles.

No, not BS. We got our information from people inside Africa. When you keep hearing the same thing, from South Sudan, to eastern Nigeria, and plenty of places in between, there’s something going on there.

It’s not your usual typical fraud-y aid program, either, though we understand your suspicion because so many of them are bad. This one did make a difference. And at a pittance.

West certainly did, but he has apologized, for whatever that's worth.

Where there's a shell, there's a way.

25 years ago, we had Ronald Reagan, Johnny Cash, and Bob Hope.
Today we have Obama, no cash, and no hope!

If you can't appreciate the pure beauty of the violin after hearing this, something's wrong with your ears.

Or you can get raw with these strings. Either way, the violin is sweet yet lethal.

Do it!

Now Africa is transformed, a continent loaded with countries on an upward economic trajectory with a viable labor force and real prospects for foreign investment and the economic growth that follows.

In coming years, Africa will matter economically because the life-or-death scourge of AIDS is no longer the threat it once was. As such, President Bush is the real hero here, his quiet humanitarian work to save lives as strong as any of his other accomplishments.

IMHO, Bush had no right to WASTE our tax dollars on Africans. Fifty years from now our grandchildren/great grandchildren will still be FORCED to "save" the lives of Africans because; Africans will never turn away from socialism, they'll continue their tribal conflicts, and the Muslims will keep most of the continent in turmoil.

I am proud of what GWB and the US did there, and it was a model for how aid should be done. As I recall Paul Wolfowitz got thrown out of the World Bank for trying to change the way aid was given.
