This is a Christmas story about a priest and his dog — and it is the heartwarming tale of this year’s holiday season.

It began shortly before Christmas 15 years ago, when a yellow Lab puppy nuzzled and licked the hand of Msgr. Robert Ritchie in a Manhattan pet shop.

And now, Ritchie, rector of famed St. Patrick’s Cathedral, has given his beloved pup a near sacred honor — placing a statue of the dog beside the figures of Jesus, Mary and Joseph in the sanctuary’s Christmas crèche. ...

I completely agree with him. The Bible doesn’t say what kind of animals in the stable. As long as it’s not tiger, giraffe, or elephant, I think it’s fine.

Awwwww. Nice story. I have a small statue of a Golden Retriever. I think it’s in scale with my creche figures. I’m going to try it this year.

Problem is that Golden Retrievers weren’t around when Jesus was. Otherwise, I’m all for having a doggie in nativity scenes.

I’m putting my Golden in this year. He has a bone in his mouth — a suitable gift for the newborn. Everyone knows that a bone is worth more than gold, frankinscense, or myrrh to a dog.
