You know, the Atlas 5 is a pretty versatile and reliable platform.
Why don't we just modify the rocket to carry the new manned space capsule so we don't have to rely on the Russians?

I'm waiting for the day somebody rigs up a seat on a suboribital bird, rides it up to LEO altitude, leaves the capsule, then freefalls through reentry and rides a parachute down.
Kinda a mixture of Joseph Kittinger and Project MOOSE (Man Out Of Space Easiest).
