Perry’s reintroduction continues
RedState ^ | 22nd November, 2011 | Dave O Connor

The telegenic Texan took two steps forward sitting in the “center chair” on Fox Monday evening. One step backward too alas, but more about that in a bit.

Gov Perry was relaxed and alert as he fielded a variety of questions. He smartly used his answers to remind conservatives why they should consider him.

This is a man who is a quick study and a formidable politician. Instead of just Texas this and Texas that he pointed out that the Lone Star state all by its lonesome is the 13th largest economy in the world. A nice way to pivot into what will be the big issue in 2012 without sounding provincial.

Zero-based foreign aid will not only warm conservative innards, it will play well as part of the spending argument. And he noted the UN can expect a zero-budget starting point. Long overdue and just hearing it made me smile. Asked about Pakistan’s aid Perry demonstrated…gasp..nuance. He noted Pakistan is a difficult problem not the least because it has nukes. Nice answer.

Perry showed another vote-winning quality when he took ownership of his infamous “no heart” comment regarding those who disagree with in-state tuition for illegals in Texas. That comment, he said, was just wrong; and added that his wife gave him hell for it after the debate. But he didn’t leave it there. He promised the southern border will be closed period a year after he takes office should he be elected. A panel member asked how this would affect the GOP’s Hispanic vote. Perry’s reply was politically astute to say the least. The Hispanics in this country are concerned like the rest of us with jobs and the economy. Closing the border, he added, will be understood as a matter of national security.

Per SD
This is just how Rick Perry is. After Hurricane Ike devastated my community, he came here to survey the damage. He did not just walk through here surrounded by security and news cameras and then make a speech. That's not Perry. He showed up in jeans and a work shirt, no cameras, no press conference, and he walked among all of us who had been hit. A hug, a pat on the shoulder, a listening ear, and an encouraging word. He saw to it that emergency shelters were being set up and food and water were available to everyone. When Obama/FEMA refused to help us, Governor Perry set up state funding to help us rebuild our homes and our lives. My home is at 'ground zero' where Ike came ashore. We all took tremendous damage. FEMA sent me a check two months later for $600 dollars. Governor Perry set up the Recovery Fund to help us all rebuild. That is what a true leader and a true Christian does. That's my Governor! I can't wait to see America under the caring wing of Rick Perry.

June 2011 Debate Newt Gingrich called Americans Heartless for wanting to deport 20 million illegals.

"GINGRICH: No, but let me say this, John. No serious citizen who's concerned about solving this problem should get trapped into a yes/no answer in which you're either for totally selling out protecting America or you're for totally kicking out 20 million people in a heartless way. There are -- there are humane, practical steps to solve this problem, if we can get the politicians and the news media to just deal with it honestly."

Trying to get “reintroduced” after you get booed off the stage for your performance only leads to more humiliation.

Perry needs to spend the time between now and 2016 developing a conservative record before trying again.

Perry's comments about foreign aid WILL resonate with the American people. He should expand upon it, for instance.."we've given Egypt, what $50 billion over the last 15-20 years..and what has it done?"

Also, he should take dead aim at the UN...time to cut way back on the $$$ we spend in that cesspool

I can see why you’re proud of Gov. Perry. I live in Illinois, and well.. enough said.

I’ve always seen him a a good man, a good Governor, and a good Conservative. We could do far worse than having him as president, even though he isn’t my #1 choice. But it’s a job interview and the process can seem personal especially when folks are jabbing over the algore interweb rather than how we’d discuss the same thing over a cup of coffee or a beer.

If I had to say one thing that Perry could have done better at in his campaign, it’s the way he’s rolled out ideas as if they’re the “Idea of the Week”, or like he was making it up as he went along. A lot of this process is packaging and marketing, and we all know the best product sometimes gets beat by the one that has created the best perception.

Just a long way of saying many of us are thankful today and every day that we have leaders like Rick Perry, regardless of where they serve.

I like Perry a lot also and I hope he can regain his traction. Part of doing this, I think, is to reassure the seniors who are concerned about his position on social security that he will not change anything for those who are receiving or are about to receive benefits. If he has said anything other than that SS is a ponzi scheme (which it is), I’m not aware of it.

Am I the only one that recalls the parallel of an old story SNOW WHITE (Sara Palin), and the seven Dwarfs (Romney, Huntsman, Santorum, Paul, Cain, Bachmann, Newt) and of course the dwarf that held out due to a contract dispute-Perry.

Full disclosure:

I support Cain. I would support Cain / Gingrich even more.

But I hope Perry gets his ... stuff together, because he could be a very acceptable “plan B”.

America first.

Texas somewhere, high on the list after America. :)

I think you may have meant to be on a Newt Gingrich thread. He's the rino and is for amnesty.

Rick Perry will have the border closed in 12 months. Rick Perry is a conservative probably more so than even you. So I guess you have labeled yourself a RINO? The only people running for President who ARE NOT for amnesty are RICK PERRY, Michelle Bachmann, and Rick Santorum. The others have flip flopped on so many issues, they can't be trusted. Therefore, flipping toward amnesty is likely.

What is most troubling about Gingrich any place close to an administration especially VP is how badly Newt would undermine that President. Newt can not be trusted.
