BELLINGHAM, Wash. (AP) - Police in Bellingham, Wash., say a 10-year-old boy defended his mother from an attacker by shooting him in the face with a BB rifle as many as four times.
The man accused of the attack rents a room in the woman's home and came home drunk and angry Tuesday morning. Police say he kicked in a bedroom door and started choking the woman.

and it was a pump action bb gun too! those weren’t real quick shots.

Some of them cost lots of bucks and have a velocity like a .22 rifle.

Police said Newman tried to get back into the home through an unlocked window, and as the victim tried to shut the window, Newman grabbed her arm.
When the woman couldn’t break Newman’s grip, her son came into the room with a pump-action BB rifle, police said.
Police said once Newman saw the rifle, he made threats to kill both the victim and her son.

There was a time that this type of incident was treated like a “local” issue by the Police. It worked quite effectively.
The article did not mention the boy’s father, so I assume he was not there. The young man deserves a lot of credit for how he handled it.
If it was a pump action one it was probably a Daisy 25. I guarantee that would hurt. When I was a kid my best friend had one and I had a lesser Daisy.
We used to have air rifle wars in which we would basically play cowboys and Indians with our air rifles. I was at a severe disadvantage and remember even at 25 yards or so, that model 25 would really hurt.
One thing that we were fairly smart about is we would wear our swim goggles to protect our eyes.

You and I have had similar experiences. Those BB guns sting! Paintball made the BB gun wars obsolete.
A .22 is a pretty powerful projectile weapon. I would take it over a bow or crossbow any day.
One afternoon we brought in a Cottontail Rabbit we killed with them. A BB in the right spot can be deadly.
Then we graduated to C02 powered 22. cal. pellet guns. Those were effective on small game. Rabbits, birds, squirrels.
I used my father's break-over 1.77 cal. pellet rifle this year to take care a bunch of birds that were destroying his grape crop. Found that a direct hit on the side of the bird only knocked the feathers out. But if you shot for the head, almost any shot was fatal.
There are a few air guns which are powerful enough for medium sized game, deer etc. but most of the standard ones, even the magnums are quite a bit under a .22 LR.
That Benjamin shoots a pellet which typically weighs around 14-15 grains and that 1100 fps is very optimistic. Standard .22LR bullet weighs around 36-40 grains with the 40 grains being most common.
I do have a Diana RWS mdoel 48 which probably does shoot a .177 8 grain pellet around 1200 fps and it will do just fine on small game. Still not up to a .22 rimfire.
Yes, I agree. A single well placed .22 rimfire rifle round to the head would probably be fatal.
I killed a coatamundi in Panama with a .177. It was a Beeman C-1, as I remember. Nice little pellet gun. I sold it before I came back to the States.

The local Wal-Mart carries the Benjamin Nitro piston and I have been tempted to buy one.
The thing which keeps me from doing so is I remember all those GM cars from the 1980s which used gas pistons instead of springs to help lift the hood.
I have yet to see one in which the gas has not escaped leaving them dead.

Paintballs and cheap eye protection glasses has probably saved a lot of kids eyesight.
When I was growing up we had some neighbors, country neighbors who lived about a mile away. They had five red headed boys who were wild as could be. I enjoyed playing with them but never would have gone hunting with one of them.
I was not too surprised when one day I heard one of them had shot his brother in the eye with a BB gun. He lost around 60% of his vision in that eye.
My brother and I had 10 shot bolt action Crossman CO2 repeaters.
We thought we were the stuff.
Then came the .22 rifles and the 20 ga. shotguns. My did we enjoy quail and dove hunting. And we held our own with the adults. The old guys really enjoyed that.

That is it. Mine did not have the suppressor on the end of the barrel, and I put a peep sight on it.
Actually, we’re pretty good on the self-defense issue here. DA’s had better have a solid case, or they wind up paying.
Based on my admittedly somewhat limited training (40-hour Use of Lethal Force course), I’d venture that given the apparently imminent threat of (at least) grievous bodily harm and disparity of force (among other factors), the kid was righteous - given the limited information presented.
Ah, I remember using daisy pellet rifles during my days in JROTC. It could even punch through skin, and could be lethal enough if it could penetrate slightly into the neck. There are also elctric automatic air guns that are powerful, painful even not lethal. BB guns these days are much more powerful than toy guns we have seen in the past.

The nitrogen gas for rifle is contained in a closed cylinder not unlike the ones used to hold hood of car up and works on the same principle.
