Dayton orders union vote by child care providers

Gov. Mark Dayton has ordered a vote among home-based child care providers about whether they should unionize. His executive order issued Tuesday sets an election for December. It affects thousands of self-employed providers. The state Bureau of Mediation Services will oversee the election. Dayton says if a union is authorized during the vote, membership would be voluntary. Dayton's decision furthers an already politically charged debate over union rights. The Democratic governor and majority Republican lawmakers have clashed for months about Dayton's authority to call an election and whether a union should exist.

What was going to happen if he didn't call for a vote? Would they have not been unionized? Or would they have been involuntarily unionized as happened in Michigan?

Would I be incorrect in thinking that these "home-based child care providers" are often family members of said children and paid by some state entity?

I believe that they would have used “questionable” information gathered by SEIU door-to-door “salesman” (that has been misrepresenting the information that folks have been signing) to declare all child-care workers to be unionized. At least these folks have a fighting chance, although they didn’t ask for or want to be unionized, so I’m not sure why Dayton is making them vote.

yes~!

Frocibly unionize them all~!

And force parents to pay social security, making them twice as expensive (so they will stop going out)

And force babysitters to pay union dues (they will like that~!)

And all the restaurants and movie theatres who used to have business from couples who go out (and need a babysitter) will suffer too.

Get all these people to see the effects of stupid ideas very early in life

In Michigan they actually had a vote, they just didn’t try real hard to make sure the victims knew about it. Most people simply threw the notice in the trash because they didn’t belong to a union and assumed it was junk mail.

The union conducted the vote, counted the votes, declared themselves to be the winners, and destroyed the ballots without anyone seeing them.

The lesson here is to read it if you get any mail from the union even if you don’t belong. Also, RAISE THE ALARM!!!!

I’m sure that’s some of them.

I have a distant relative that does a similar scam ,but it’s involving her kid with major disabilities and mom is counted as a paid in-home health care attendant.

the SEIUer rats should have sent the info in publisher’s clearinghouse envelopes.

“mail in this card with this stamp affixed if you do not want to be in the union”

In Michigan the unions had to steal money from day-care providers by intercepting the government money sent to poor women. If the day-care provider didn't accept the day-care equivalent of section-8 renters, they would never have been on the radar. Now SEUI is stealing money from MI medicaid recipients by having their care providers declared state employees and therefore subject to unnion dues.

All the above has been discussed here on FR at time time or another. I'm gonna guess YOU know this already, but maybe others can benefit from knowing -- I know I did.

So in other words, not only does the child receive tax payer funded payments due to the disability, but the parent, aunt, uncle, whatever receives tax payer funded payment for caring for the disabled child and now these familial care givers are going to unionize in order to collectivly bargain for even MORE taxpayer funded benefits?

I never knew that owners of a business could be unionized.

Now SEUI is stealing money from MI medicaid recipients by having their care providers declared state employees and therefore subject to unnion dues

Its also important that people recognize exactly how complicit the GOP in Michigan was in this scam.

GOP Senators, SEIU Taxpayer Giveaways, Campaign Cash and More, OH MY!

On Aug. 5, 2009, Sen. Jason Allen, R-Traverse City, introduced Senate Bill 731, which would give statutory cover to a scheme transferring approximately $6.6 million in taxpayer money annually to the SEIU government employee union, one of the parents of ACORN. This is accomplished by creating a shell government "employer" for some 42,000 individuals who are actually hired by elderly or disabled Medicaid recipients to provide personal care services in their homes. A Mackinac Center lawsuit is pending regarding a similar arrangement imposed on home day care providers.

Wendy Day of Common Sense in Government has reported on Facebook that Allen was the recipient of a $2,000 campaign contribution from the SEIU on June 22, six weeks before SB 731 was introduced. In another post she hints that introducing and passing the bill was part of a quid-pro-quo between Senate Republicans and the SEIU for union support of former state representative Mike Nofs in a November 2009 special election, which state Republican Party Chair Ron Weiser had characterized as among the party's top priorities. Day observes that the SEIU endorsed Nofs on August 22nd, two weeks after SB 731 was introduced, and sent four full-time workers to help on his campaign.

Incidentaly, its important to note that Jason Allen was narrowly defeated by Dan Benishek in the primary race to fill the 1st district seat vacated by Bart Stupak. Now we're hearing rumors that our current senate majority (Randy Richardville (R)INO) leader will challenge conservative Tim Walberg for the 7th district seat.

They can win representation if a majority of those voting in a certification election vote “yes.”

I wonder what percentage of indendent providers won’t get a ballot. The fix is in.

I didn't know they even had that formality. I had thought that the day care workers had been lumped into a previously unionized job category by some pro-union state official and "Presto!" instant union members.

I’m not sure why Dayton is making them vote.

Governor Mini-Me is just following orders from his organized labor masters.

Why in the heck would these folks unionize against THEMSELVES? If they are the Management AND the Worker who goes on strike? Who will they petition for wages and benefits? Will they hire a scab to watch the kids while they walk in front of their houses with signs? Will they allow themselves passage to the inside their own houses when they are on strike?

So many questions, so little time... Seriously, this governor is an idiot.
