Gabrielle Giffords wants to feel ‘better’ before returning to D.C.

— Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, in her first public interview since she was shot in the head in Tucson last winter, doted on her husband, former astronaut Mark Kelly, and called him “brave, brave, brave” as she kissed his bald head.

Giffords appears on ABC’s “20/20” show Monday night. It’s her first extended interview since the January rampage that killed six people and wounded 13.

A segment that aired on “Good Morning America” shows a thin Giffords with a broad grin as she talks about Kelly. Her husband replied that the word “brave” was the same one that came to his mind when he thinks of her — “brave and tough,” he said. Then Giffords, looking directly at Kelly, responds almost in a whisper: “Tough, tough, tough.”

It wasn’t clear from the clip beyond those few words just how fully recovered Giffords is 10 months after the shooting. Interviewer Diane Sawyer recounted how Giffords would discuss her career plans and her recovery, and the segment included some video of Giffords’ progress, from being unable to speak at all, to the point where she was ready to give a television interview.

At one point, Giffords breaks down sobbing while having difficulty relearning to speak and she and her therapist hug. In another clip, she sings into a microphone as part of her speech therapy. And in another she walks holding hands with her husband.

The television interview comes as fellow victims of the shooting came to Washington to testify in favor of a gun-control bill. They said that Giffords’ appearance represents a major milestone for them as it helps them cope with the trauma they’ve endured over the past 10 months. About a dozen survivors and family members are in Washington lobbying for legislation that would extend criminal background checks to

You’re aware that Strom Thurmond was a Republican during the final 38+ years of his Senate career, right?

I totally agree with you. I don't think her district is really being represented. I feel bad for her, as I would for anyone, but she is not up to the task for which she's been elected.

Adding the gun control on top of it is just another example of the libs opportunism and control.

Of course I do. I was born and raised in Georgia. I’m a hell of a lot more familiar with southern politics than you will ever be, partner.Once a Democrat, always a Democrat......see Strom’s voting record for details.....

Gifford is unable to form sentences. Her husband cued her to utter a rehearsed phrase. She seems well enough cognitively but may never regain the ability to articulate. Didn’t like the manipulation of the public. Unfortunately, it is standard media procedure now.

she should not be allowed back to her job

Of course not but nobody will dare suggest that. If the people in her district want to vote her back in, fine. That's one less Dem vote to worry about in DC.

Let's be real here. There's no way she's up to performing the duties that job requires. Period. I doubt she ever will be. Is she up to having an enjoyable life at home with her family & friends? Sure.

Giffords barely won in 2010. Jesse Kelly, who challenged her then, has filed to run again. I don’t know if Giffords has filed or not. It’s a swing district.

Her district has been without representation for almost a year, but that’s their choice to make. I don’t know if she’s even been able to cast a vote since then.

It’s a touchy situation. Kelly can’t be out there stating the obvious or else he’ll seem heartless.

I don’t see how Giffords campaigns, let along do the job she’s been elected to do. If she wins, it will be via sympathy vote, not a confidence vote.

Maybe her constituents will realize that they’re not being represented adequately and make the decision to retire for her.

Watching the video, towards the end there was a time when she could only say the word ‘chicken’ for several says.

That was not fully reported by the press. When she was asked about President George W. Bush all she said was ‘chicken’. They made it sound like she was just using that word for him.

Unbelieveable. No, actually believeable.

If she had any class she would resign and run again in a few years when she improves. This is a farce. But Democrats have no class and always feel entitled to govern. The party of socialist policy wonks

Isn’t a Republican going to run against her? This is ridiculous

Could she do that before the shooting?

I hope this woman has a full recovery.

Having said that, it is shameful she did not resign shortly after the shooting. She has disenfranchised her constituents from meaningful representation just so she can hang onto power.

I hope Jesse Kelly runs against her again. Unfortunately, she might be reelected by a “sympathy vote” from the ever increasing group of sheeple voters.

“it seems that she can’t string together cogent complex statements or thoughts”.

Is that a requirement to be a demonRAT congress critter?

So you’re saying that it was the Democrats who pushed for Strom Thurmond’s reelection at the ages of 81, 87 and 93? Okey, dokey.

There are a lot of examples (apart from Robert Byrd) of Democrats sending politicians that are way past their expiration date back to Washington—Dan Inouye, John Dingell, Charles Rangel, Carl Hayden, Claude Pepper, Jamie Whitten, Jack Brooks, Fritz Hollings, etc. And as for younger, mentally incompetent Democrats, there’s always Hank Johnson and Cindy McKinney from your own home state. And you choose *Strom Thurmond* to make a point about how Democrats keep sending back people without “anywhere near the mental capacity to truly serve their constituents”? I would think that someone who is so knowledgeable about Southern politics, being born and raised in Georgia and all, would be able to come up with a second name that does not belong to someone who not only was supported by Republicans when he ran in his 80s and 90s, but who affirmatively was opposed by Democrats in those races.

What happened to Giffords was awful...
that said, when are her husband and father going to apologize to the Tea Party folks in her district for accusing them for the shooting, hmmmm?
Kelly is a dim lib in uniform...celebrated the repeal of DADT with his wife who voted for it; jumped to the conclusion that a conservative shot his wife without knowing the facts; using this opportunity for more gun restrictions...
he’d be perfect to replace her...

The Judge was going to rule against, Obama in a case “United States of America v. $333,520.00 in United States Currency et al”. I don't know much about it, seemed to be about bulk cash smuggling in or out of the United States. The Obama administration claimed was their right to seize under Executive Orders, instead of laws.

She can’t run because she can’t speak well at all. But you are right, I think her husband may run.
