BURLINGTON, VT (WPTZ/CNN) - Vermont's governor has released a new immigration policy for state police, which is being dubbed the "look the other way" policy.

Gov. Peter Shumlin says state troopers should not try to arrest people just for being in the U.S. illegally.

Back in September, a state trooper made a routine traffic stop and asked one of the passengers his immigration status. He suspected that person of being an illegal immigrant and called Customs and Borders Patrol, who arrested the man.

The arrest sparked protests from the migrant worker community, who says the trooper should never have asked about the man's immigration status.

The governor's office says the trooper did nothing wrong, but Gov. Shumlin said the state's policy was in a gray area that needed clearing up.

"Vermont farmers can't survive without workers from outside America," Shumlin said. "That's just the way it is. We've got to keep our dairy farms strong, so we've always had a policy in Vermont where we kind of "look the other way" as

"The arrest sparked protests from the migrant worker community, who says the trooper should never have asked about the man's immigration status."

Apply this scenario to any other country in the world and they would say you were absolutely crazy, amidst their laughter. Trying being an illegal in Mexico and see what happens.

No, I don’t understand how laws can be government sactioned ignored.

I just don’t get it.

Why can’t I ignore the laws that impede my ability to make money? I want to sell Crack!!!

Why can’t conservatives in power just decide to ignore liberal laws in a state?

At the end of the day, the guys with the guns really get to decide who does what, and what laws are followed.

It seems there are no conservatives with government sanctioned guns anywhere but the military, which can’t enforce anything domestic.

Hmmmm, now that couldn’t be by design now could it?

I wonder if the state police will look the other way at violations of other federal laws...
like homemade whiskey, counterfeit currency, and sawed-off shotguns?

The are calling it the "Really Stupid Policy!!"

There needs to be a system to Remove States from the Union, if the other 49 don't want them in it anymore. Vermont would be on the top of that list.

If the government can pick and choose which laws to enforce and which to ignore, the people should be free to do the same.

Hey remember was it last week, how Mexico was complaining about how their own citizens in U.S. who are criminals are being deported back to Mexico.Mexico claims this has increased crime on their side of the border

Many of the Mexican criminals who are being deported to Mexico and thats not acceptable to Mexico. They wish them to remain here and be our problem.

"Vermont farmers can't survive without workers from outside America," Shumlin said.

If it were up to farmers and politicians, slavery would make a comeback.

Why is it when Liberals try to justify something that is wrong they always use the phrase “Just because”...

Leahy hasn’t funneled enough subsidies to Vt. dairy farmers?

Policy is not law.
Officers are sworn to uphold the law... not policy.
