You are definitely not alone in having had your Gaydar triggered.

This fruitcake is now trifling with the kiddies ~ and you know what that means ~ (tympanic beats ~ boom ~ boom ~ boom ~ boom) ~ (cymbal crashes ~ CRASH).

I think we'll see Mikey getting picked up before long now that he's "come out".

The guy isn’t protesting the Christmas toy drive at all.

Perhaps you missed the part where he protested the Christmas toy drive.

Let's be clear about Mikey's motivation and what angers the folks here on FR. It is apparent by protesting any part of the drive that Mikey was trying to get his nose under the tent.

This is Mikey's position (quoted by the reporter): “This is arrogance beyond measure…this is clearly an egregious Constitutional mistake.”

In defense of the Academy's command, it appears they have realigned the drive to be conducted out of the Chaplain's office. Whereupon, it appears Mikey decided to withdraw for a better opportunity.

Mikey must have been uncomfortable when, after arguing it was a Constitutional error to allow cadets to participate, he found it prudent to concede it is permissable for the Chaplain's office to participate.

Note to Mikey (who almost certainly studied Constitutional Law as a law student):
Check the current headlines, Mikey, regarding FDR’s Christian prayer to Almighty God broadcast to the nation in connection with our 1945 D-Day invasion. Would you have bitched about that prayer by the CinC? If not, why not?

Mikey Weinstein’s Crusade

Meet the man who’s trying to purge evangelical Christianity from the Pentagon.

You may recall the headlines in January, when a company called Trijicon, the lead supplier of rifle scopes to the U.S. military, was found to have inscribed them with coded references to passages in the New Testament. That was Weinstein — his organization threatened to sue Trijicon, which eventually agreed to discontinue the practice and distribute kits that would enable troops to retroactively secularize their scopes. Weinstein grabbed headlines again last month by pressuring the Pentagon to withdraw an invitation to the Rev. Franklin Graham, known for his Islamophobic oratory, to speak at a National Day of Prayer Task Force service. That provoked a stiff rebuke of Weinstein and his group from Shirley Dobson, wife of conservative Christian leader James Dobson and the task force chairwoman.

Built like a cinder block, with a bare cranium shaped like a howitzer round, Weinstein — a former Air Force judge advocate general — has the air of a born fighter. This battle is personal for him: Nearly 30 years ago, as a Jewish cadet at the Air Force Academy in Colorado, he was twice beaten unconscious in anti-Semitic attacks. (There wouldn’t have been much of a choice of targets — only 0.3 percent of the members of the U.S. military identify themselves as Jewish. Ninety-four percent are Christian.) Visiting his son, Curtis, on the eve of his own second year at the academy in the summer of 2004, Weinstein was stunned to learn little had changed; over lunch at McDonald’s, Curtis told his father that he had been verbally abused eight or nine times by officers and fellow cadets on account of his religion. Weinstein filed a complaint, in response to which the Air Force launched an investigation that revealed a top-down, invasive evangelicalism in the academy. Among other things, it revealed that the commandant of cadets taught the entire incoming class a “J for Jesus” hand signal, that the football coach had draped a “Team Jesus” banner across the academy locker room, and that more than 250 faculty members and senior officers signed a campus newspaper advertisement that proclaimed: “We believe that Jesus Christ is the only real hope for the world.” Weinstein has been a First Amendment vigilante ever since.

Weinstein argues, “are the flip side of the Taliban. They’re like Islamic officers exercising Quranic leadership to raise a jihadi army.” (A spokesman for the Navigators said the group had had no interaction with Weinstein and no comment on his activities..

http://www.foreignpolicy.com/articles/2010/05/25/mikey_weinsteins_crusade?page=0,1

Although Weinstein’s past lawsuits have garnered plenty of attention, they were just a warm-up for his next battle. Last week, he announced his group was preparing a lawsuit on behalf of Zachari Klawonn, a Muslim U.S. Army specialist at Fort Hood, Texas, who claims he was harassed and threatened after a Muslim psychiatrist’s deadly shooting spree there last fall claimed the lives of 13 people on the base.

Weinstein, however, is not inclined to accept such assurances. “Fundamentalist Christianity in the military is like magma,” he says, “and every hour or so it bursts up like a little volcano and you have to beat it down.”

was the early part of February 2004 when the Mel Gibson movie came out – I forget the name of it by I refer to it as the “Jesus Chainsaw Massacre,” or “Freddy vs. Jesus.” Obviously this is “Passion of the Christ.” I found out at that time, from Protestant members of the faculty who had reached out to me, that the administration was putting tremendous pressure on the 4,400 cadets and 6,000 staff to go see that movie. I was surprised that I had heard about this from my three children that were at the Academy at the time. So I asked them and they said, “Yeah, it is terrible. It is everywhere we look — it’s in the academic buildings, when we stare down at our plates, when we march into Mitchell Hall,” (the dining facility) “flyers are put on our plates, in the academic buildings the walls are covered with these posters exhorting us with this stuff.”

The proselytizing mission has gone so far that there are formal organizations among officers and enlisted men. For the officers, it’s called the Officers’ Christian Fellowship; for the enlisted folks, it’s called the Christian Military Fellowship. And they have a three-level, or a tripartite goal, which goals they view as far more critically important than the oath, the blood oath, they all swore out to protect and preserve, support and defend the Constitution of the United States. There are now 737 U.S. military official installations — it’s actually closer to 1,000 — in 132 countries and we have variances of this Christian Taliban and the Christian al-Qaeda on every one of them.

My wife and I looked at the other organizations out there – the Anti-Defamation League and the American Jewish Congress, People for the American Way, Americans United for Separation of Church and State, the Southern Poverty Law Center – all good organizations, and we belong to them all. But there was no entity that directly confronted, what we saw as the loss of the command and control to these underground religious fanatics.

Now, I remind you, Hitler never had more than eight percent of the German citizenry in the Nazi party; I don’t think Stalin ever had more than 2.9 percent of his closest association. So, this is plenty, particularly when you are talking about a command and control structure like the U.S. military. The frightening prospect that our conventional and nuclear forces—technologically the most lethal organization ever created by humankind—was falling into the hands of a Christian Taliban. There was nobody focusing directly there.

We are done trying to influence politicians, either Democrats or Republicans. It was useless to make phone calls or send email, or smoke signals or carrier pigeon. All that does is beat these people back for three or four days like a weed-whacker. You have to go to court, and we did that three or four months ago. The Military Religious Freedom Foundation and one of our members filed a massive lawsuit against the Pentagon on September 17 in Federal District Court in Kansas City. We are going before the Federal judge to show a pervasive and pernicious pattern and practice of unconstitutional religious rape of freedoms of our U.S. military.

And I am telling Jews, who will mostly read your newspaper, that I am sick and tired of being reminded how wonderful the evangelicals and fundamentalist are to us, how much they love Israel, and if my wife was here right now, she would tell you about what she calls the First Thanksgiving Theory. Yes, the right-wing fundamentalists, dominionists, evangelical Christians love us Jews in Israel, to the same extent, and this is why my wife and I call it the “First Thanksgiving Theory,” the Pilgrims loved the turkey the night before the first Thanksgiving. It is all about fattening the herd for the slaughter that is coming, according to the Book of Revelation. And whether Jews like it or not, whether you’re a Lubavitcher, devout Orthodox Jew or assiduously secular or agnostic or even atheistic Jew, Jews tend to be, whether we like it or not, the miner’s canary for the morality of the communities in which we live. And that is to say that when we start to asphyxiate, Houston, we’ve got a problem. Well we’re asphyxiated.

Meet Mikey Weinstein, who has become the leading whistleblower and campaigner against the influence of fundamentalist evangelicals in the US military. Listening to him is a strange experience. He is the most combative speaker I have ever heard in public life. His language is so extreme that I hesitate to reproduce it lest readers discount his views. “When I see anti-Semitism, I don’t fucking care if I live or die, someone’s going to get a fucking beating,” he says in one of his milder moments.

We are facing a national security threat in this country that is every bit as significant in magnitude, width and breadth internally as that presented externally by the now-resurgent Taliban and al-Qaeda. And it is the destruction of the US constitutionally mandated wall separating metaphysical and physical, spiritual and non-spiritual, church and state, in the technologically most lethal organisation every created by humankind, which is our honourable and noble military. I’m here to report to you today that that wall is nothing but smoke and debris. We are facing an absolute fundamentalist Christianisation – a Talibanisation – of the US Marine Corps, Army, Navy, and Air Force.”

Read Gritty's comment about who Weinstein is. What I want to know is why do believers in God have to kowtow to a teensy number of nasty aggressive atheists?? It's time for all military academies to stop being WIMPS. We have to turn this around!

Mikey Weinstein sounds like an asshole.

Seems accurate since he sent his son to the institution where he himself was "...twice beaten unconscious in anti-Semitic attacks".

Such victims do not always wake up and others often sustain permanent damage. It is not exactly a cost-effective way to learn how to fly an airplane or gain a college education that would be endorsed by most parents.

When Mikey Weinstein was alledgedly twice beaten unconscious at the AF Academy,

Was this Jewish kid just walking down a school corridor minding his own business when he was suddenly dragged into the latrine and punched out?

Or did the congenitally combative Mikey get into a chestpoking argument with one of his hated “Christers” and suddenly found he had bit off more than he could chew?

Facts, we must have facts.
