The House of Representatives passed a bi-partisan resolution Tuesday night reaffirming “In God We Trust” as the official motto of the United States. The 396-9 vote came at the request of Rep. Randy Forbes (R-VA) – in part over President Obama’s refusal to correct remarks he made that misstated the motto as “E pluribus unum” instead of “In God We Trust.”

Lawmakers voting against “In God We Trust” include Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), Rep. Gary Ackerman (D-NY), Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich), Rep. Judy Chu (D-CA), Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO), Rep. Mike Honda (D-CA), Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA), Rep. Bobby Scott (D-VA), and Rep. Pete Stark (D-CA). Voting present were Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) and Rep. Melvin Watt (D-NC).

A speech President Obama gave last year in Jakarta, Indonesia, he stated that the motto was instead “E Pluribus Unum,” Latin for “Out of many, one.”

"Displaying 'In God We Trust' on public property is appropriate in some circumstances," he wrote. "There is no need to push for the phrase to be on all federal, state and local buildings. "The fear that unless 'In God We Trust' is displayed throughout the government, Americans will somehow lose their faith in God, is a dim view of the profound religious convictions many citizens have," he added. "Trying to score political points with unnecessary resolutions should not be Congress' priority."

However, the legislation is not a mandate--it supports and encourages the display of the motto in all public buildings, schools, government installations, etc. It also seems to make it more difficult for atheistic whack jobs to call for, and be granted, removal of the motto. Sure, it's relatively meaningless legislation, but to me it's a sway in the right direction.

Seems to me that he was rather out of focus on this issue. And he is “principled” in a way that only someone who has never worked in the private sector (he went from law school straight into politics) could be—without any sense of the effects that his actions will have on the real world. But that’s what happens when we elect a 30-year-old with no military or private-sector experience based on his voting record over 18 months in the state legislature. Now liberals will point to how “even conservatives” oppose having “In God We Trust” as our national motto. Heck of a job, Jason.
