Korean Air pilot under investigation for pro-N. Korean activities

By Lee Hyo-sik

A Korean Air pilot has been under police investigation for allegedly posting dozens of pro-North Korean messages and other material on his website in breach of the country’s National Security Law.

The National Police Agency said Wednesday that a 45-year-old captain surnamed Kim started a website (www.scintoy.com) in August 2006 and had posted more than 60 articles and video clips that criticized the South Korean government and instead promoted the North’s propaganda. Some of pro-North Korean material was found to have been produced in the communist state.

Under relevant laws, South Koreans cannot view pro-North Korea information either on- or offline. Those who distribute and promote pro-North material are subject to prosecution.

Police banned the pilot from leaving the country and asked the nation’s largest flagship carrier to prevent him from working as he may defect to the Stalinist state.

``We received a tip in January that Kim was engaged in spreading propaganda online. On Tuesday, investigators raided and searched his home, confiscating about 10 pro-North Korean books and a computer hard disc that may contain material promoting the North’s systems,’’ a police officer said.

He said after examining seized items, investigators will summon him for questioning.

``We will also interrogate the pilot about whether he was engaged in offline activities such as contacting North Korean spies or South Korean nationals sympathetic to the communist state. We asked Korean Air to suspend him from flying airplanes as there is the risk he may steer a plane to the North to avoid prosecution,’’ the officer said.

Police also found that Kim is a member of a pro-North website opened on Naver, Korea’s largest web portal, whose operator was indicted for breaking the National Security Law in June. The 43-year-old individual surnamed Hwang made headlines in late June by shouting ``Praise General Kim Il-sung’’ during a trial.

Last month, the Suwon District Court sentenced him to 10 months in prison.

`We received a tip in January that Kim was engaged in a hunger strike. It was a dead giveaway he was promoting pro-N. Korean activities...

Why not let him go? Good riddance!

Ship him North and he can fly Chia Pet’s vaunted jets while receiving the joyous benefits of North Korean living.

If he thinks NorKland is that nice of a place show him the photos of work camps, the starvation, and other horrors that are being experienced daily. Even have NorK defectors talk to him in person.

After that take him by submarine to NorKland. Put him in a dinghy and let him paddle the rest of the way in. Any soldiers stationed on the beach will know what to do with him.

Air Koryo is partially on the list of air carriers banned in the European Union.[24]

As of 30 March 2010, the EU will allow Air Koryo to operate into the European Union once again with two approved aircraft. The two aircraft will be Air Koryo’s new Tupolev Tu-204s, registrations P-632 and P-633. The remaining fleet will continue to be barred from EU airspace and rights to land in the EU.[19]

The rationale for the decision by the European Commission was the following (paraphrased):

During ramp inspections in France and Germany, verified evidence of serious safety deficiencies on the part of Air Koryo was obtained. These deficiencies were also identified under the SAFA programme (DGAC/F 2000-2010).
During other subsequent ramp inspections performed under the SAFA programme, Air Koryo persistently failed to address these deficiencies which were previously communicated by France (DGAC/F-2000-895).
Incident-related information of a substantiated and serious nature communicated by France indicated that Air Koryo had latent systemic safety deficiencies.
There was a demonstrated lack of ability on the part of Air Koryo to address these safety deficiencies.
There was a failure on the part of Air Koryo to respond adequately and in a timely manner to an enquiry by the civil aviation authority of France regarding the safety aspect of its operation, which showed a lack of transparency or communication, which was also demonstrated by the absence of reply to a request by France.
The plan for corrective action presented by Air Koryo in response to France’s request was not adequate and sufficient in order to correct the identified serious safety deficiencies.
The authorities of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea with responsibility for regulatory oversight have not exercised an adequate oversight over Air Koryo, which it is obliged to do under the Chicago Convention.
Therefore, and on the basis of the common criteria,[25] the Commission assessed that Air Koryo does not meet the relevant safety standards.[26]

It's easier just to take him up to Panmunjom and throw his ass across a 6 inch high curb. That is all that separates the two sides, there. The Nork guards will hammer him into a bloody hash, but that's not the ROK's problem... If he has Air Force data, however, you know he has long since sent it North. I'm betting that Korean Airlines pilots are all ex ROK Air Force.

Google Panmunjom images.
