Buchanan: GOP Risks Third Party Revolt with Romney Candidacy

The GOP could face a revolt from within its tea party grassroots base if it nominates an establishment candidate without true conservative, anti-big government values, one of America’s leading conservative pundits tells Newsmax.TV in an exclusive interview.

Specifically, columnist and former Republican presidential candidate Pat Buchanan told Newsmax that the nomination of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, the architect of a state insurance plan that many say inspired Obamacare, could prompt the tea party movement to form a third party.

“It’s a real possibility because the tea party folks and the Republican conservatives and social conservatives and others are very apprehensive of Mitt Romney and they don’t feel he is really one of us,” Buchanan told Newsmax.

“They’ve got reason for that feeling and that sentiment but if they do that, if, for example … they persuaded Ron Paul to run on a third party ticket, Barack Obama would be easily re-elected,” he added.

Buchanan would certainly know. A former aide to President Ronald Reagan, he was one of the first conservative commentators to hold a prominent job as a TV commentator and syndicated columnist in the mainstream media.

From 1966 through 1974, Buchanan was an assistant to Richard Nixon, and from 1985 to 1987, White House Director of Communications for Reagan.

Buchanan ran twice for the Republican nomination for president and then in 2000 ran for the White House on the Reform Party ticket. He said he can see a third party candidate emerging in 2012 if Mitt Romney gets the GOP nod.

Of the current Republican candidates he said, “Certainly Michele Bachmann is one of us. I think Rick Perry is. I think Herman Cain is. If you are talking about a more traditional conservative certainly I would put Santorum in there.

“This isn’t the Democrats where they cheated Hillary out of the nomination that by the numbers ought to have been hers.”

The rats can vote for Romney in open Republican primaries. They will flood into the California Republican primary and other Republican primary and vote for Romney. The Democrat syncophants in the media say that Romney is the candidate the 0bama fears most. “Don’t throw me into that briar patch by nominating Romney.” Enough said.

If Myth Dole is the candidate, then the plan should be to start nonstop impeachment proceedings the day Ubama starts his second term.

Tea Partiers have to make it clear to the GOP that we will not vote for Romney. NO WAY! We have to tell them we will leave the presidential section of the ballot blank if the GOP selects him for their candidate.

Tea Partiers who say they will vote for him if he is the candidate because he’s better than Obama only encourage the GOP to pick him.

IMHO, Romney is Obama’s mini-me.

I wouldn't vote for the worthless bastard ( Mutt Romney ) if the Pope was his running mate, and he was running against that greasy little idiot ( Amadinnerjacket?) that is charge of Iran!

I loathe his rotten filthy guts and everything about him.

I think the GOP elites would prefer losing this election because of a third party split

than they would losing their party to conservatives,
which is what is happening.

How about if Cain or Rubio is on the ticket with Romney? It would help me to have a definitive answer on how FReepers stand on this issue.

I wouldn't support a ticket with Romney on top if it included a resurrected Ronald Reagan. I might support a ticket with a true conservative on top and Romney as VP. I'm not sure but I would sure wonder why a true conservative would put Mitt on the ticket.

That’s a bit extreme... at least Romney is America’s worthless bastard. That’s better than Kenya’s worthless bastard.

Already California, once a GOP bastion, has reached the point where no Republicans hold statewide offices, and other states in which non-Hispanic whites are becoming a minority will follow, he writes.

All part of the plan, as Texas, Florida, Nevada, Arizona and many others follow...

What did anyone expect?

After government rolled out the red carpet for tens of millions of illegals, who literally double their numbers every couple years with anchor babies, all on the backs of the tax payers..

The WSJ has been running articles, almost daily, warning that Romney is NOT A CONSERVATIVE. One article, by Henninger, said that there was still time to force Romney to the right by getting behind some of the more conservative candidates. (Newt and Santorum come to mind, Romney seems to simply dismiss Bachman)

Newt even insinuated that he could be the candidate to force Romney to move right.

And with the illegales (anchor babies or no) come misguided sympathizers who say the only way to help them is to shanghai the taxpayer into doing it. Private charities? Missions to Mexico? What’s that?

I wish we had a like button, so I could just endorse your comment.

I actually think that the country and conservatives would be worse off with Romney as president because the Repubs in Congress would be hesitant not to vote with him. So, we’d be left with Obama- lite and nothing to stop him.

In fact, only a blind fool can't see where this will lead the U.S., in just a few short years.

Thanks to government, and their drive to divide the united, there is nothing that will stop this national socialist suicide.

You can vote Green or Communist or Mickey Mouse write in, that’s the beauty of America. But it’s horribly misguided. The GOP has sometimes gotten sensible justices into the USSC. Tell me any Democrat — any at all — who has.

Romney will likely do what John McCain did last time. You may be right, but I don't think it will work this time around. I can't see any real conservative being muzzled by RINO Romney. Palin went through it for all to see. A conservative VP isn't going to have much influence with a Romney caretaker government and I'm sure they know that. Try to imagine Rubio or any conservative caught between media baiting on RomneyCare and ObamaCare? What could they say and not draw Romney's ire? It's a tough spot being second fiddle to a RINO.
