Lowe's closes stores, slashes new store plan
Reuters ^ | October 17, 2011 | Phil Wahba

Posted on 10/17/2011 6:31:30 AM PDT by Beaten Valve

Lowe's Cos Inc (LOW.N) said on Monday it is closing 20 of its U.S. stores, eliminating nearly 2,000 jobs, and the home improvement retailer now plans to open far fewer locations in the future, citing the need to improve its profitability.

Lowe's, which operates about 1,700 stores in the United States, said it closed 10 stores on Sunday and would close another 10 within a month. The expenses associated with the closing will come to 17 cents to 20 cents per share.

Some 1,950 workers will lose their jobs.

A tornado destroyed ours in April. They opened the new one Sept. 9. Glad we didn’t lose it for good.

Closing 20 out of 1700 stores. That’s like 1% nationwide.

Here is Florida, as I’m sure is true in much of the rest of the country, it seems that Loewe’s and Home Depot are very often close to each other. I suspect that in some markets, there’s not enough volume to support two stores..or that one has an inherent location advantage..i.e. closer to a highway...this is just careful pruning..and good corporate strategy..

Our town has a Lowes and Home Depot right cross the highway from each other. Lowes is always busy, HD is always mostly empty. Not sure how our HD stays in business.

It looks like the majority of the store closings will affect those in Obama states. So will the 2000 people that lose their jobs understand that Big Ears is largely responsible for their situation? Probably not.

Same with ofice supply stores. I remember when Office Depot opened in Santa Maria, CA. Not long after that, Office Max opened, then Staples. Definitely overkill for a city of that size. Office Max is long gone, not sure about O.D., since we moved away six years ago.

One of the sad things is that the small, independent family-owned office supply store that had been operating for years closed its doors as a result of the big box stores.

During the whole recession, lows has been mismanaged, used debt to make it look like it had sales., but not the first company to do this, They build a new store 12 miles from the old new store where I live, why, the population was not expanding. When I need something I go to the little old ladies hardware store next door, to lows and pay more for the item just because it makes me happy.

I’m surprised that they’re shutting down the store in Chalmette, Louisiana. That area (south-east of New Orleans) got some of the worst damage in Katrina and is still slowly rebuilding. Even six years out, there’s still a big demand for building materials there.

It's the weirdest thing... the local Home Depot added a French language option to the self-service checkout registers. Trying to camoflage the Spanish a bit, that's my guess. Either that, or they anticipate gangs of French day laborers camping in the parking lots...

The difference between Lowes and Home Depot, is that Home Depot is a union shop and Lowes is not. This is also why Lowes is always less expensive than Home Depot.

I got a better idea for everyone on this thread, visit your locally owned hardware or carpet or plumbing or nursery or paint store. I'll guarantee you at least 90% of them are conservative and your money will stay local.

Home Depot and Lowes have the world convinced you get the best price and you don't.

Give your local retailer a chance, that's all we ask.

I lived in So Calif until 1993. Local HD stores were building ‘humanitarian shade shelters’ in the middle of their parking lots so the ILLEGAL day laborers who swarm your car there could have a place to be out of the sun while they were waiting to mob you in the parking lot.

HD lost me permanently with those moves.

Lowe’s other advantage is tht their employees can take your list & go thru out the entire store to help you. AT HD, you get passed from one department worker to another.

I have 3 Lowe’s within 38 miles of me & they are VERY helpful.
