Fundraising figures released over the weekend demonstrate that only two Republican candidates -- Mitt Romney and Rick Perry -- enter the dash to the nomination with both the financial support and the campaign infrastructure that equip them fully to compete.
And the Obama campaign -- eager to ensure that no candidates get free rides in the primaries -- has already begun making assumptions about whom President Obama is likely to face in the general election. That means Romney is coming under pressure from both sides, even as he seeks to consolidate Republican support early in the process.
Before we get there, Romney and Perry remain the frontrunners for the nomination. One of them remains overwhelmingly likely to secure the GOP nod.
The other candidates -- led by Herman Cain, whose burst in the polls has been the story of the last week -- have nowhere near the combination of fundraising muscle and on-the-ground activists that Perry and Romney have.

We got a little insight into Mr. Cain’s foreign policy thinking on the NBC Meet the Press interview. He likes Kissinger and likes to read George Will and Krauthammer as his policy experts.

It’s the message and how well they can relate it to the American voters.
The fact my boss brought up Cain to me was a shocker. If he is supporting Cain, that means there are many “insiders” doing the same.
P.S. It shows that Herman Cain has no money, but then again, the FEC doesn't require candidates to report revenue from a freakin' BOOK TOUR!!

Lots of money is GREAT. So how does either of them go about buying my vote, or for that matter, buy any of the Tea Party votes? Are we supposed to just vote for one of them because they flash a wad of money?

There’s this black dude - his name is Cain. He’s got virtually everything going for him except money. It’s not like he’s a smarmy wishy washy anti-gun pro-choice pro-illegal RINO. Guess you figure the primaries have to be bought. I don’t want to pick a candidate based on how little I have to hold my nose to vote for the guy. And I don’t thing the GOP braintrust has done such a great job in the past. Far as I’m concerned, both Perry and Romney supporters are way too comfortable with the washington status quo.

Well they obviously look at Cain as three fifths of a man.

There is a strong correlation between funds raised, organization on the ground and chances of winning.
It’s not YOUR vote they are after. They are going for the undecideds; not political junkies who are not familiar with the candidates and will only be reached through television. Candidates have to counter misinformation, promote themselves with soundbites, and get “top of the mind” awareness. Politics is marketing your message.
And that takes money. Lots of money.
Still pimping that debunked talking point/false choice.
If I was flogging a candidate who is down 15% in the polls despite raising lots of money, I'd probably focus on the money as well.
