ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- Sean May has been wearing an American flag pin to work every day for the last two years.
"In this day, I kind of feel like it has a little bit more of a powerful meaning than just a pin on somebody's jacket, and I wear it with pride because I like where I live and I love this country," May said.
The 26-year-old front desk supervisor at Casa Monica Hotel in the heart of downtown St. Augustine was told to take the pin off Thursday because it violates company policy.
"I've actually gotten probably more compliments about it than any of the service I've actually done at the hotel, which is an interesting concept," May said. "And I told her, I said, 'I don't feel I need to take this off,' and she told me, 'Well, you've got a choice. You can go home or you can remove the pin.' And I said, 'Well, I'm not going to remove the pin, so I guess I'm going home.'"
May said Casa Monica recently had a change in command at the corporate level and is trying to revamp its image.
A spokesperson for the hotel released this statement: "Casa Monica has always had the personal appearance guidelines, and they are currently being enforced."
"It seems silly. It seems so, so silly in the long run," May said. "They're so upset about a little pin, and yet I come to work every day and flying over the hotel there's a gigantic American flag."
May said he loves his job, but he's willing to risk it to stand up for what he feels is right.
"Why would I want to work for a company that isn't going to be supportive of what I believe in and what I'm working towards?" May said. "I think that if they do get rid of me over this, it will open a lot of eyes for other people."
May is so avid about trying to change the company policy that he wrote a letter to the corporate office.
Good for that young man to stand up for what he thinks is right. I would myself.
A Marriott hotel. Any Marriott points folks out there that want to “advise” hotel ownership that a flag pin is not offensive?
I can see their point, sad as it may seem.
What if a Nazi employee wanted to wear a swastika pin> Or a gay employee sported a rainbow pin? A satanist with some occult symbol. The list can go on and on.

A company has a right to have a uniform policy. That said, I’m proud of this young man. He is standing up for his principles and that’s a great thing. I think he’ll go far.

Two can play this game. I’ve just canceled my Marriot reservations for a business trip next week and I’ll be booking with a different chain.
the flag is Not offensive.It is the symbol of our Country and our ideals. The establishment of its own displays an American flag outside the establishment.... leading to the reasonable conclusion that they ought know an American flag pin is not offensive.What if they said employees could not wear a wedding band? Or what if the uniform policy was that all female employees had to dress like French Maids with their sexual organs displayed and available for all?would you still feel the same?
I never said it was offensive.
I frankly don’t find any symbol offensive but some do. I was just pointing out that a private corporation has the right to implement a uniform policy and allowing one employee to wear a certain pin will result in having to let all employees wear their choice of pin.
If the company instituted either policy you cite, I would also support it.
1) It’s their right as a private company to tell employees exactly how to dress.
2) It’s an employee’s right to decide whether or not to work for a given employee. This guy certainly did.
I’d also point out that the young man indicated the hotel flies a giant American flag out front.
A company certainly can allow some pins, but not others. Just like allowing women to wear skirts at work doesn't necessarily mean allowing them to wear extremely short ones that show half their butt.
OTOH, if what was stated upthread is true and Marriott Hotels gave all employees a flag pin after 9-11, then they can't very well tell those employees not to wear them. That makes no sense.
If the large flag out front is for decoraction, it is not being flown properly. Display of the US flag is not to be a decoration, which it seems to be. I hope people notice this and avoid the place like Typhoid Mary’s home.

Corporations have no allegiance to country, borders or constitution. The “Captains of Industry” are almost always Free Traitors.
A Freeper that equates wearing a US Flag to the Nazi swastika has no place posting on Free Republic.
