Perry says 'media elites' to blame for painting him as racist

Texas Gov. Rick Perry suggested that "media elites" are trying to portray him as a racist in a controversy over a slur against blacks that was painted on a rock near the entrance of his family's hunting camp in Texas, according to a lengthy interview with the Republican presidential candidate published in the Des Moines Register.

"I think a lot of people get offended when the media elites try to paint everyone from the South who has a twang to their voice as somehow being racist," Perry told the newspaper. "I'm very proud of my record dealing with not only that rock. When my family had the opportunity to paint over that word on the rock, we did it. I'm very proud of how we have dealt with the issue of racial diversity in the state of Texas, having appointed more qualified minorities than any governor in Texas history, including the first African-American to the Texas Supreme Court."

The operative word here is "trying" - it's in this article, but not the title. Every conservative, or Republican for that matter, is a "racist" according to people that work at places like SeeBS, but Perry's "no heart" remark is what did him the damage.

The “Heartless” comment was my immediate thought but yes, the media paints nearly all republicans as racist and that’s just to be expected.

Speaking of liberals, race, and Herman Cain, you should see what they were saying about him at the DUmp earlier this afternoon - they are STILL the party of the KKK.

That’s lame. I don’t think Perry is a racist.

It’s the whole In-State Tuition for Illegals and Imperial HPV thing I don’t like.

Rick Perry is a cunning, devious, slick politician, but he is not a racist. All the more reason to stop the invasion of the U.S. by people who will guarantee a permanent majority for the Demonrats who slander all conservatives and conservatives, including Herman Cain, as racists.

AS much as I don’t like Perry, he is very correct on this.

Maybe so, Rick, but you can’t blame the Media for your hare-brained immigration opinions.

Got a call today from my conservative sister in law in Montana. She had just heard from her liberal daughter in Colorado that Rick Perry had painted the N word on a rock on his ranch.

That is what people who listen to the liberal media (the daughter) and people who don’t listen to any media (my
sister in law) think about Perry and the rock.

That is a shame.

It's a brilliant strategy - his wife is out there saying people don't like him because of religion and he's saying the media elite is trying to hurt him.

I don't like Perry, but it's brilliant misdirection with a 1-2 punch of people attacking him because of his religion and the media attacking him, because he's trying to make people forget the debates, his falling poll numbers, his record, past appearances, etc.

racist?

wow Perry is in total denial if he thinks his sinking poll numbers are about that silly rock.

It's your illegal immigration stand silly!

There is still time for Perry to save this, but he would have to do a complete 180 on the tuition and then go HARD right on immigration to compensate. But I don't think that's going to happen.

Rick Perry is a cunning, devious, slick politician,

That there's a lot of redundancy! :)

And he may be all that -- I'm not very familiar with him or Texas politics in general -- but there certainly isn't much evidence of cunning, etc., in his debate performances. There's indication of hardening of the arteries in his cranium, if you ask me.

Still, if he's such a great guy, let Texas hang onto him. Presidential politics does not appear to be his forte.

I'd be pretty sure that the media report didn't say that (it was probably a report about painting over the rock), but your niece took it that way.

I think it's a planned misdirection to get people focused on the media and not Perry himself, but you're right that all Republican candidates should expect this. It could be seen as a sign of weakness if Perry is letting the media get to him. When you play in the major leagues, you need to brush this stuff off, but I don't think the media is getting to him - he could have trotted this stuff out earlier instead of a few days after a debate when he didn't give the performance he needed and when some unfavorable polls came out.
