Perry faces crucial debate Tuesday

AUSTIN -- Gov. Rick Perry has the opportunity for a political do-over this week in a critical debate that he hopes will get his sagging campaign back on track after subpar debate performances and a plunge in the polls.

Conversely, another poor showing in Tuesday's Republican debate in New Hampshire could plunge him deeper into a hole, making it even harder for the one-time GOP front-runner to regain the momentum he enjoyed in the opening weeks of his campaign.

Perry's performance at the last debate in Florida was universally panned and contributed to a downturn that knocked him out of the lead in the Republican nomination battle. While Perry was falling, Atlanta businessman Herman Cain was surging, and Mitt Romney, a former governor of Massachusetts, was holding steady as the current front-runner.

A new Granite State Poll in New Hampshire, which conducts the first-in-the-nation primary, showed Perry in fifth place with only 4 percent, while Romney was a strong first place with 37 percent. But other recent national polls placed Perry toward the front of the pack, in second or third place, despite his drop in support.

Cain is my current choice among those in the running.

I will say that I’d rather have Perry than Romney.

Other than Zero I say anyone but Romney.

Romney just rubs me the wrong way...ewwww

Your style of presentation indicates that your commentary, in general, is of absolutely no value. All mouth, Juvenile. Better to remain silent than to open your mouth and prove you’re an idiot.

Where Perry and Romney will not put this bastard on the carpet on issues like fast and furious and will dance around many topics for fear of being called a racist or being mean to a standing president. Cain will not hesitate. Calling a black man racist because he asks another black man a legitimate question will not be in the play book. Beat Obama with a Cain I say!

"You know that statement where I said that EVERYONE who doesn't want illegal immigrants to receive should receive in state tuition and all sorts of other freebees and goodies at the expense of law abiding citizens and taxpayers are HEARTLESS?" ..."Nevermind, forget about that, believe me, not your lying ears and eyes, I am REALLY a conservative..., yeah, that's the ticket, I'm a conservative." ..."Vote for me, you can TRUST me, I'm not like those 'other guy's."

I WAS going to support Perry, untill I learned what he has done and REALLY thinks about ILLEGAL immigrants... He believes THEY come first, that THEY have more "rights" than legal US citizens do. Fine, let THEM donate to his campaign, let THEM work for him, let the ILLEGALS he loves so much vote for him... Oh sorry, THEY can't do any of these things because THEY are in the country ILLEGALLY. Too bad for Perry, I guess he should have thought of that BEFORE he called all of us who would and could have done all of these things for him: "HEARTLESS".

Now that Palin is officially out, I am supporting Cain. I am hesitant though, because if he doesn't take shots against Mitt more, you have to wonder if he is playing only for veep for Mitt. He did support him in the past.

I’ve never seen him in a debate, but I get the impression that Mr. Cain can think on his feet, and that he is a good speaker. This debate may turn out to be very interesting—and telling.

Perry’s problems are not so much poor debate performances as they are poor past policy decisions that most potential Republican voters disagree with. A do over won’t help him. All he can hope for is that other candidates self-destruct to some extent so he doesn’t look so bad in comparison.

“Now that Palin is officially out, I am supporting Cain. I am hesitant though, because if he doesn’t take shots against Mitt more, you have to wonder if he is playing only for veep for Mitt. He did support him in the past. “

My thoughts exactly. I haven’t fully boarded the “Cain Train” yet until I see if he’s really willing to go after all the liberal positions Romney has taken. It’s also questionable if he has the finances, organization, and desire to go all the way. He’s polling really well now and getting lots of press, but just a few weeks ago it’s rumored he was very close to dropping out.

He’s still going ahead with his book tour, rather than campaigning, which to me is not the worst thing in the world, but it’s not exactly the actions of a candidate that is committed to the long haul. I’m taking a cautiously optimistic wait and see approach with Cain. I’m also still open to Perry, though he needs to have a much better debate and show some depth of knowledge on the issues. An economic plan would be nice too.

Both Perry and Romney are simply unacceptable. Romney's a social liberal who enacted a NAZI healthcare plan. Perry's simply not ready for primetime..."Heartless", am I?!?

Cain is the only one who's consistent and has shown he's fought liberal policy (including Hillarycare) in the political arena for years and years.

I'm backing Cain. My wife picked Cain out early, so I'll get "extra points" for doing the right thing now - lol!

Mitt Romney self destructed many years ago in Conservatives eye.

ThaT leaves us with Perry or Cain. One of them has no campaingn in most of the states to speak of and has no money to do so.

Zero tolerance on “stalking horses” I say. It’s up to everyone to prove who is not one at this point. Going after Perry and leaving Romney whole must not be the end result after the debate.

I, for one, will be praying that he does well. The rest of you are nuts (I say that in a lovin way!)! He is the only one who can win and do things like shut down the EPA. You know that will be his #1 target!

It's still early. It doesn't take much money to make the debates and appear on TV, and that's mostly what's being done at this stage. If Cain continues his strong debate performances, he'll have plenty of money and organization before Iowa and NH.

Someone needs to attack Cain's idiotic Federal Sales tax plan. Here's the line:

Mr.Cain, you are going to lead the Tea Party by taxing tea, and everything else people buy? Am I dreaming or is this really your plan?

The question is whether or not the painted rock story, and Cain's subsequent playing of the race card, has made Perry squeamish about attacking Cain.

If it comes down to another Romney vs Perry contest, with Cain getting a free pass, I will not be happy about it. I will give big praise to ANYONE on stage willing to attack that stinkin' 9-9-9 nonsense.
