Herman Cain: pizza boss, radio host, ballistics expert, minister. President?

He is the latest Tea Party favourite to burst through in the increasingly heated race for the Republican presidential nomination and see their poll numbers rocket them to frontrunner status.

However, unlike previous rightwing darlings such as Texas governor Rick Perry and Minnesota congresswoman Michele Bachmann, wealthy businessman Herman Cain, 65, can claim to be cut from a very different sort of cloth from the average Republican candidate.

First, he is not actually a politician. Cain, whose CV includes being a radio show host, a navy ballistics expert, a Baptist minister and a Federal Reserve official, has never held elected office in his life. His most famous job was as chief executive of the fast-food firm Godfather's Pizza.

Yet none of that seemed to matter to the cheering crowds at the Values Voter Summit in a Washington DC hotel late last week. There was much to celebrate. A Zogby opinion poll had just boosted Cain into first place in the race, with 38% of the vote, compared with 18% for former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney. Perry trailed in third place with 12%. The study even showed Cain beating President Barack Obama in a match-up by 46% to 44%.

“A Zogby opinion poll had just boosted Cain into first place in the race”

Being that I am a port-sider, concerning handedness not politics, I am observant when it comes to this trait in others. So, I noticed the other day that Herman Cain is left handed as well. Thereby, the odds of him becoming our next president has increased dramatically as four of our last five presidents have been left handed. Good news for sure!

I’ve never heard of Cain being a Baptist minister. He attends a Baptist church, but I don’t think he’s ever been a minister.

Oh, no! I hadn’t noticed that. Obama is left-handed. May have to reconsider my support.

IIRC, he’s an associate pastor at his church.

Cain is great on everything. The main fly in his ointment is the scrutiny he will get for his 9-9-9 plan.

I’ve already posted several threads on this and I see even CONSERVATIVES showing opposition and having serious questions and reservations.

If he can truly defend it and show that it works, he will truly deserve the presidency. If not, he will be shown to be a mere idealist not worthy of consideration.

Unfortunately, the 30 second sound byte debate isn’t going to do justice to his complicated tax plan. In fact, the attacks in the next debates are SURELY going to come his way instead of Perry’s.

He better be prepared.

Had this guy pegged way back in May. I had never used my hard earned money to go to a candidate before but did for him. It’s about time we run this country like a business. I think he’ll be the Repub candidate, I also said Obama would be the candidate back when Hillary was way ahead and took some heat for that!! :) I just thought that because I went into Books A Million and his books were everywhere and there were signs here in SW Mo for Obama in people’s yards. Was very odd.

If he doesn't win this year, we need to make sure this man is groomed to be president in the future. As it is, he will be a great Vice-President; more qualified than our current one, for sure, and he won't fit the “stupid” trope that the press gives Republican VPs.

He’s an “Associate Minister” (I believe was the term I heard), but I don’t know the difference.

Given he has never held elected office, or been a general, his chances seem slim to none.

I saw people last night saying at least we know what Rick Perry stands for but what does Herman Cain stand for and I have to laugh, we all have the internet, not too hard to figure out what he stands for, he has a website! :)

Folks need to do their homework before knocking him.

I am against the 9-9-9 plan, but his site has now stated that it’s to be used as a transition to the FairTax. As I understand it the idea is to incrementally cross over to the FairTax, (part national sales tax, part income tax, then only sales tax). I disagree with the 9-9-9 plan, but support Cain. He said he was trying to unite FairTaxers and Flat Taxers (it will not), and I think he got flack for it, and has now decided to move back to the FairTax (When the 9-9-9 site first came out, it had no mention of the transition to the FairTax—Phase 2—my guess is that the 9-9-9 was decried and he re-evaluated that position, or possibly he had the idea the whole time).

I still like Cain, but that doesn’t mean I agree with every idea his campain (or just him, for that matter) puts forward.

Well heck, George Washington was a farmer, surveyor, general, and brew master.

I believe 9 (could be 8, saw the list on another thread), of our Presidents never held an elected office. That’s pretty substantial, and many, many Americans are tired of politics as usual.

Whether for the primaries or for the national election, should he happen to win the nomination, Cain has the least political experience of anyone on the debates stages.

We already have one novice in the Oval Office, but even he has a couple of elective political jaunts.

Running a corporation is much different than being president of the Nation.

I just don’t have enough confidence that Cain can do the job to jump on his band wagon. He is too much of an unknown quantity, politically.

He got more than double the votes of Romney, and more than triple that of Perry in the Zogby poll mentioned in the article. That’s pretty substantial.

Most of us at F.R. agree that we need a different tax plan but most everybody disagrees on how to do it. That may be true of the general population of people who actually pay taxes as well. Factor in that 47% that are net tax takers as well and are happy with the system as is and you will have a huge problem getting any part of the tax system changed whatsoever.
