Homeland Security moves forward with 'pre-crime' detection (Big Government™ is watching you)
CNET ^ | 2011-10-07 | Declan McCullagh

An internal U.S. Department of Homeland Security document indicates that a controversial program designed to predict whether a person will commit a crime is already being tested on some members of the public voluntarily, CNET has learned.

If this sounds a bit like the Tom Cruise movie called "Minority Report," or the CBS drama "Person of Interest," it is. But where "Minority Report" author Philip K. Dick enlisted psychics to predict crimes, DHS is betting on algorithms: it's building a "prototype screening facility" that it hopes will use factors such as ethnicity, gender, breathing, and heart rate to "detect cues indicative of mal-intent."

The latest developments, which reveal efforts to "collect, process, or retain information on" members of "the public," came to light through an internal DHS document obtained under open-government laws by the Electronic Privacy Information Center. DHS calls its "pre-crime" system Future Attribute Screening Technology, or FAST.

Not covered by HPPA for long...Fed new “rule’ by HHS to mandate all medical records available to the Feds.

City of Chicago high schools for decades had successful rifle teams. These kids practiced on .22s and later on .17s which they handled regularly. Someone hit Daley with this after researching the fact that in the decades of the program, no student ever used a gun in a crime.

An angry and embarrassed Daley canceled the program. It's not about safety, but control. Same thing with this program.

The Spirit of ‘76 goes out with a whimper.....

No one will do much about this but complain. We are, after all, 300 million plus, more concerned with who will win American Idol, black Friday bargains, and Lovin’ It at Mickey Dees.

Patrick Henry, Sam Adams, and Paul Revere would all be in prison today....

And America will bend over and take it.

Exactly! Anyone that willfully allows their rights to be abused by participating in airline travel is just telling gubmint: "You win, you can do whatever you want to me, I have no inherent natural rights." That is why they can get away with it, and see it as a sign of further submission that leads to obscene garbage like this.

While I can give a pass to anyone forced to travel by airline for their business, I am extremely disappointed to see my fellow citizens willingly submit to extreme gubmint abuse on a daily basis, at this point with question it seems. I guess we'll all watch for the next line in the sand, until they cross it with impunity, and then the next line will be drawn.

All of this crap at the airports could have been nipped in the bud if enough people would have simply refused to use the airlines. But no, it is more important for people to fly to Disney World rather than stand up for their natural rights. (Maybe too many of our citizens have been dumbed down to the point that they don't even understand what their rights are?)

>> Disney World rather than stand up for their natural >> rights. (Maybe too many of our citizens have been dumbed >> down to the point that they don't even understand what >> their rights are?) Our Country, as we knew it, is going, going, gone. The culture war was not fought (when and where it could have been) and lost decades ago. Get used to the "victor's justice". There will be more of it. The majority will acquiesce to the new reality as they always do. The remaining will complain, the most active will be marginalized and silenced. Our Nation is already too far removed from its root culturally and demographically to reverse the trends. Even if we "win" in 2012, the best we can hope for is 4 or 8 years of someone like GWB. It will merely slow our own decay. Its already all too apparent. I'd love to be wrong about everything I've said.

"the same dhs that views returning veterans, limited-government proponents, metal=based currency proponents as potential threats, etc."

. . . plus home schoolers, unregistered churches (especially house churches), along with many fundamental, Bible-adherent churches, people who pioneer their homestead (meaning people who don't take out mortgages, but buy a lot with cash or private contract and might take a couple of years to build their own house with cash while living in a 1970 18 foot house trailer); etc.

. . . basically, people who try to stay out of the system as much as possible. As Obamacare evidences, no longer can government stand that individuals not be tagged and made systemic components.

I'd love for you to be wrong as well; sadly, I don't think that is the case.

Hey, Aqualung!     No, seriously, if they ever let on as to what those factors might be - oh, say young, male, urban, and maybe Amish - the howl from the left will be heard for parsecs.

‘If this sounds a bit like the Tom Cruise movie called “Minority Report,” or the CBS drama “Person of Interest,” it is.’

Actually, it sounds a great deal more like George Orwell’s 1984 - but, then, it’s clear that that’s where the government of the United States is headed, so it’s not surprising.

Some largely obsolete phrases come to mind, like “secure in persons and property” and something about warrantless searches, but, hey, we all know that the Constitution of the United States doesn’t mean anything anymore.

>> We’ve always been bitching that they don’t profile, now >> we’re bitching that they do? From years on this forum I do get the impression that to many freepers "the end justifies the means", i.e. they would not mind to have the totalitarian tools to set boundaries for those they do not agree with, to bend and subdue them to their will and socially engineer "conservatism" through giving to a large and overbearing government large and overbearing police powers. They then hypocritically decry when those same tools will be used against them. But hey, a tool is just a tool. A tool to those who wield it. You get what you asked for, not what you wanted. We inherited a Republic and a limited government, but squandered our inheritance. Now its time to ride the pony.

As soon as the demographic statistics are tabulated on those “most likely to commit a crime”, the program will be dropped as “Racist”.

You're absolutely right there. Most things these allegedly well-intentioned {expletives} force on us or try to force on us couched in "safety" terms are not. They are, as you say, about control.

I grew up eating raw cookie dough, riding around in the back of a station wagon not even in a seat, said car had no airbags, no 5mph bumpers, had a V-8 and could go well over 100 (don't ask how I *know* this), no cell phones, running all over the neighborhood playing sports with friends in yards - no carefully groomed and padded play areas. We built tree-houses, we camped out without adult supervision, we learned to shoot real rifles, we hunted, rode ridiculously fast off-road bikes... and yes, a few of us took a few trips to the ER for a broken this, lacerated that. We survived, we look back on the scars and memories and smile. Are our kids these days really making memories?
