KANSAS CITY, Mo. – In a presidential straw poll taken at the National Federation of Republican Women’s (NFRW) 36th Biennial Convention on Oct. 1, Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain took a near-majority of the vote.
Cain received 48.9 percent of the 505 total votes cast, with Rick Perry placing a distant second and Mitt Romney placing third. The poll featured nine Republican presidential candidates.

Why are you talking about Sarah Palin? She was, indeed, not on the ballot.
If and when she runs, and if and when she competes in a poll or caucus or primary, then she is an appropriate topic of conversation on a thread about that event. For now, she is a non-issue. She can change that if and when she pleases.

Cain ran in the Republican Senate primaries in 2004. He’s been on the radio with solid conservatism. There are reasons not to support Cain for President, but not his commitment to our principles.

I do not understand all of this over the top hatred for Cain I have found on this site the last couple of days. Now you have people calling him “race-baiter” and accusing him of being pro-homo, etc., because he answered a reporter’s question.
And Perry did with the last name flap, and Mitt did with.. everything he’s done, and Palin did with J.D., and Newt with Globull Warming, and Paul with Israel, etc.
The funny thing is, we already have an “underground” campaign slogan for Cain -
“African-American? 0bama’s the African, Cain’s the American.”
Why don’t you research Herman Cain’s biography before knee-jerking to his ‘gotcha’ responses to the likes of Christiane Amanpoop.
Cain is obviously a man who treats people as if they were as honest and forthright as he. Many of us have experienced back-stabbing in the work place because we were too trusting.
I hope he reflects on how he’s being ‘played’ by the media. Smiling at him while dealing those ‘race cards’.
When the dust clears and people -- including Herman Cain -- find out what was actually written in the NYT article, yesterday's interview will be seen as the insignificant "gotcha" moment that it was. Perry's family did not paint "Niggerhead" on the big rock; it was already there. Perry's father took a hunting lease on the property and then painted over the offensive word and then turned the rock upside down. Good for him.
Herman Cain gave an honest answer to the question that was asked of him. In retrospect, his answer was not wise since he did not have all the information about the story -- just like most FR posters. Cain is an honorable man, and I have no doubt that he will correct the record based upon more complete information, and that he will learn from having been successfully ambushed by anti-GOP media which is seeking to destroy all viable GOP candidates.
As for Cain's GOP bona fides... Herman Cain has been a Republican a lot longer than Rick Perry, whom I like. He was a Reagan Republican, and gained prominence as a member of a commission when he publicly confronted then-President Clinton over a socialist initiative that would have been harmful to businesses. It was a principled Conservative rebuke that silenced the argument. Needless to say, Herman Cain did not support John Kerry in 2004.

The preference for vice-president is especially interesting. Gingrich’s numbers jump dramatically. That is probably an indication of respect for his experience and intelligence, but reluctance to put him at the top of the ticket because of all his other baggage.

Lots of Fanboys and Fangirls on the site. They are Palin, Perry, even Ron Paul til their dying day. Like “Twilight” vs “Harry Potter” fans, they will work to destroy anyone but their obsession.
I wasn't either. Could it be that neither one of us is a declared candidate?
Because I think a fair amount of people on here will never be happy. At least that’s my observation. They want a politician that is absolutely perfect. For politicians that aren’t running (Palin, etc.) they build up as perfect in their mind. Everyone else they tear down.
Only Cain, Newt and Santorum actually bothered to show up for the convention.

BTW, FR was overwhelmingly for Romney at the same time Cain was for Romney, so I will not hold that against him.
There is no such thing as a perfect candidate. People are not going to like 100% about someone who is actually going to win.
Cain has turned out to be a real shock to me...I actually want to vote for the guy.

The top thing I like about Cain is that he understands the need to “teach conservatism”.
Conservatism must be taught and learned.

I guess Cain is not their candidate, but their tactics against fellow FReepers (using lies, innuendo and half-truths out of context) have been over the top of proper protocol for this site.

Herman Cain’s Enron-esque Disaster
Cain served on the board of directors throughout Aquila’s ill-fated trading misadventure and the subsequent collapse of the company’s retirement fund. In fact, he chaired the board’s compensation committee, which, according to the lawsuit, had direct oversight of the push to get employees to invest more and more in Aquila stock. As chair of the compensation committee, Cain also saw fit to dole out $30 million in bonuses, not including stock options, to the top five execs at Aquila in 2002, with the company’s stock plummeting. A month after the Kansas City Star reported on the hefty bonuses in July 2002, the company laid off 500 employees, and the losses to employees holding company stock had reached hundreds of millions of dollars.
As a board member, Cain would’ve had direct knowledge of Aquila’s activities, says Fred Taylor Isquith, a New York attorney who litigated the employee class action. Asked if it was fair to place blame on Cain for the debacle at Aquila, Isquith replied, “Yes, I believe it is.”

I like your response. I don’t care for the “mushy middle” idea of never criticizing your opponent, but I believe one of the reasons Cain has been doing well is just that. Perry should take notice. He is wasting his time going after Romney. Romney is not moving beyond the 20%. As I understand it, the winner take all primaries of the past have been largely changed. A

Sarah hasn't announced. Until she does, having her on a ballot is meaningless.
We very well could have a brokered convention. Romney will now win under those circimstances.

That blew my mind. This was a national convention, for crying out loud. I'm not quite sure what to make of the other candidates. Seems to me they could have worked a national convention into their schedules somehow.

But it's OK to totally destroy and pile on Perry? As the long term governor of the great state of Texas I think he deserves a bit more respect than he got here. Mother Jones, Salon, HuffPost, PaulBots and other assorted bloggers have been spitting this out since May. Seems to me if it had legs, it’d walked already, but we’ll see... as I mentioned in my earlier post, it’ll probably be thrown at him during a debate, especially now that Cain’s poll numbers have risen.
