So 37,000 more have just given up. Probably on the street, now. The gubmint will now care for them in better fashion than if they'd tried to stay on their own feet.

"There are plenty of good available jobs out there that are unfilled, just sitting there waiting for someone to apply. There must be, else why would we need to bring in millions more immigrant workers, each and every year? "

I would think, with just about skeleton crews on in many places already, that would have to slow down the number of new filers. Also, the fact that seasonal hiring is now beginning, they are going to let less people go this time of year. What is truly staggering to me, is that so many people had been let go going into the holiday season (it is the end of sept thru jan).

this does not bode well in my opinion since we are already less employed than last year, the big retailers are bringing on less seasonal help, and jobs are being axed by the numbers they are. It will create an even more dismal holiday season this year than last as even less families have an employed person to go shopping.

Correct! And I suspect a good deal of that book-cooking going on with these numbers!

This will be touted as front page news. When the “unexpected” corrected stats are adjusted to show job losses actually increased, the correction will be buried on page 37.

"Initial claims from two weeks ago were revised up to 428,000 from an original reading of 423,000"

Expected.

Low numbers caused by "technical issues?"

I know someone laid off about a year ago by the post office. They were unexpectedly “called back” in August. The postal service is going broke, and snail mail is not gaining any ground. I was wondering why they were recalling laid off workers.

There are probably a ton of hidden games like this going on. The d@mned communist.

I’ll wait for the less optimistic ‘revised’ figures — to be released without fanfare at a later date — at 4:45 pm on the Friday before a long weekend...

This morning I heard a TV genius say 375 K is now the “progress”,number. But he’s full of Krap and so is anyone else who thinks we can gain ground so long as the unemployment filing rate is even one (1) larger than the “new jobs” rate. We need something north of 100K new jobs/ month just to accomodate population growth, school grads, etc. While it’s clearly desirable to quit losing jobs progress will not be made until the differential (losses minus news) goes to zero and starts going the other way. And Stu Varney is correct: We need at least +200K new jobs / month if we ever expect to see the turn-of-the-century business level again.

As far as I know much stimulus money is still unspent but must be spent by 2012. There may be a temporary glut of stimulus money into the economy that will make it look like it is improving just in time for the election. Hope it doesn't pan out that way and fool the folks.

I have been tracking the ‘new’ unemployment claims since the first of the year 2011. I wrote them down.

In variably, the total number announced on each Thursday is slightly REVISED UPWARD when you do the math for the following week. This week something is totally wrong.

Last weeks number was 423,000. I would expect a REVISION up about 3-4,000, which has been the pattern all year long.

If you take the total figure of 371,000 and add the 37,000 they say was the ‘drop’ amount, that equals 408,000. A quite long way from 423,000.

For the entire year, there hasn’t been one single week when the ‘revised’ number has been lower. Suddenly—a ‘revised’ figure that not only is lower, but is suspiciously lower.

Someone is lying.

This administration is capable of any number coming from them of being deliberately wrong. It has to stop.

Everything we got here in Reno area said 371,000..... not 391,000.

Now the ‘revised’ figure makes more sense.
