And with that background, I am even more appalled at this. That these government officials, can say with a straight face, that it is reasonable to expect “privacy” when performing their job in public is not only an affront to every one else’s personal freedom, but it is also “newspeak”. Public action is private? What are they smoking?

Who even cares if they're in "public"????? If they're on the clock and being paid with public dollars NOTHING NOWHERE is "private"! I don't want to be an ass about it so I would support on at least a trial basis not installing web-cams in toilet stalls used by public officials, so long as they don't abuse the privilege, but that's about it.

Well, if it’s a felony punishable by 15 years to “eavesdrop” on that officer, the bystander might just decide to erase that video rather than be caught with it—or maybe not make the video in the first place, if he knows the law.

Or just decide that since the rules on recording are unjustly tilted in favor of the state, no recording he ever makes may ever be used to help a state actor, until they fix the rules.

The illinoiscorruption.net has issued an informational video and a press release, to help the media and the general public in the upcoming oral argument at the Illinois Supreme Court hearing in Annabel Melongo’s eavesdropping case. The hearing is scheduled for January 14th, 2014, at the 18th floor of the Michael A. Bilandic Building, 160 N. LaSalle Street, Chicago at 9.30 am.

Please support this cause. The Illinois Eavesdropping law at its very core creates a two-class legal system wherein the conversations of the powerful and well-connected are protected to the detriment of the less powerful. The upcoming oral argument presents a unique opportunity for the common citizen to re-establish that legal balance that will unequivocally establish a right to record public officials in their public duties.
