DETROIT (AP) -- In exchange for an agreement to create 5,100 union jobs in the U.S., General Motors will hire thousands of less expensive employees and try to replace some longtime workers.
The offer is part of a tentative new contract between the automaker and United Auto Workers that union leaders recommended to their membership on Tuesday. Now, nearly 50,000 workers at GM must vote to accept or reject the four-year contract.
The contract also includes a $5,000 signing bonus and profit-sharing checks if GM earns a minimum of $1.25 billion in North America annually. Those payments, and others, will replace annual raises for most workers.
UAW President Bob King hailed the deal as a sign the union and industry can cooperate to save American jobs. And at least one local union leader predicted workers would accept the contract, the first since GM and Chrysler made it through bankruptcy in 2009 after receiving government bailouts.

Ubama is still trying to put lipstick on his pig.
Not sure who to buy a car from anymore - we know about GM and Chrysler, Honda = snot-nosed punks, and Ford’s oveseas plants are buffoons.
Hyundai? Kia?
Bought a Hyundai Elantra today. Beats the crap out of any US car.
Yeah, kinda like when I take four quarters out of one pocket and put ‘em in another, I’ve created or saved a dollar.
Is this “unexpected” or “historical”? So which is it? “Creates” or “keeps”? What happened to “saves” anyway? Damn commie jive talkers.
Hey GM. If no one is buying your junk and the economy is still tanking, how exactly are you going to make all these Union jobs? I guess there is going to be a room full of employees sitting around every day to fill the requirement.
I will never by a GM car again.
The “new GM, needs to learn from the “old GM -
Don’t send pussy whipped negotiators to the Union bargaining table!
Saved or created doesn’t cut it, $3 per hour wage increases makes no sense; more medical insurance makes no sense; hiring bonuses and profit sharing is way too early for a bankrupt company, that just dumped all it’s losers onto the investors/government.
I wonder what would be the results, if the “new GM” was required to combine it’s profits with the costs of the “old GM”?? I bet it would be a huge consolitated loss!
(I guess that would be both pretax, and after tax profits, as us taxpayers got a 1/1000 of a second flighting chance to sign off on the “new GM” getting $45 billion in bankrupt tax loss carryforwards of the “old GM”, not available to any other company, not even Solandra
This “New GM is going to go down the same crapper shoot as the “old GM” , it’ll only be a few years until the unions regain total control!
I am with you, Hildy. Never.
And they'll be all pissed off at Republicans for it.
None of it makes any sense. GM has said at this point that 1.25 billion is the mark. That is way down
My best cars were a 69 Dodge Dart(paid $50)and a 79 Celica (paid a couple hundred)...absolutely beat the hell out of both...especially the Celica(power and reliability = fun)
(....until some drunken illegal Mexican took it out on the 57 Freeway in So. Cal. : (
...seriously looking at Hyundai.
Got a 2011 Sonata.
Very impressive car, and a real head turner.
Future daughter-in-law has a new Elantra.
Wife now wants an Equus—with the reclining rear seat and TV in the back.
Now that’s engineering!
Good luck with the Elantra. A beautiful car.
I had an Elantra for a few years. It was a good car. It was traded in for an Escape 4x4 that was more suited to the snowy winter roads in Idaho.
I have always bought GM, but no more. I will consider Ford because they did not take a government handout.
I traded my Cadillac CTS (which I loved, but it had problems) for a Toyota Avalon. The factory is in Kentucky, in a non unionized factory.
F'em. .... and the UAW douchetards. They need to go smoke some more pot, drink a couple of 6 packs and get on worker's compensation like the rest of the union trolls with fake back injuries.
STARVE THE BEAST. Just say no to GM, Cadillacs and any other Government Motors products.... copy and past to any bulletin board, web site even the big brother web site that Obamalamadingdong has set up to report dissent.
I’ve just been dealing with Ford and Honda recently.
