Pelosi for tax reform only if it increases revenue
By Mike Lillis - 09/15/11 01:21 PM ET

The top House Democrat warned Thursday that the GOP's push for sweeping tax reform would win Democratic support only if it increases overall revenues.

Republican leaders have been highly critical of the nation's 35 percent corporate tax rate, and Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) is expected Thursday to ask the budget supercommittee to overhaul the tax code as part of its deficit-slashing mandate.

But House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) preempted Boehner's speech Thursday with the stipulation that any such tax overhaul would have to reduce deficit spending on its own.

"Any tax reform and closing of loopholes, which is really important for us to do as a sense of fairness, must also reduce the deficit," Pelosi said during a press briefing in the Capitol. "You can't just say we're going to have reforms that would lower the corporate rate — which I would fully support — unless you have enough reform to reduce the deficit, too.

"Otherwise," Pelosi added, "all of the reduction of deficit will have to come out of the cuts side, and I just don't think that that's fair or part of the balance that the American people are seeking."

"You're putting too much of a burden on the cuts side," she said.

The 12-member supercommittee is required to identify at least $1.5 trillion in deficit reduction over the next decade, or $1.2 trillion in automatic cuts will kick in. The panel's deadline is Nov. 23.

Pelosi on Thursday urged the supercommittee to go well beyond its $1.5 trillion goal, saying House Democrats would prefer something like the $4 trillion "grand bargain" Boehner and President Obama were nearing in July before that plan was derailed by House Republicans.

"We'd like to see a bigger deficit reduction than has been called for," she said.

Pelosi also warned that, while an overhaul of the tax code is an admirable goal, it might be too ambitious given the supercommittee's tight timeline.

"We may not be able to get the job done in the next few weeks," she warned.

It is the un-written rule of everyone in government. It is not your money, it is the kings and he can take it from you.

OK, Nancy. Pass our tax cuts, so you can find out what’s in them.

Who gives a hoot what Pelosi is for? Her days of being relevant are long gone.

balance that the American people are seeking

The Great Lie.

Why must a cut be "balanced" by a price increase?

With anyone But San Fran Nan, I’d say shove the Reagan & JFK tax reforms in front of her if she were serious about increasing revenues, but she’s so myopically focused on her nit wit base, .....

At least there’s no danger of Both Zero & Biden being impeached and Her becoming Prez.

Yup - I believe the GOP is in favor of this also. BUT NO on tax rate increases on any class in America. The GOP should be in favor of growing the tax paying base and therefore more revenue. It is UNFAIR that 51% of the population is NOT paying any Federal Income Tax.

Pelosi: “unless you have enough reform to reduce the deficit”.

Come on, Nancy. Stop with the obfuscation and slickness. Why don’t you just come out and say you are insisting on tax increases.

Furthermore, it is a non sequitur, based on her premise that the only way more revenue can come to the government is via tax increases, which has been proven false more than once. The GOP must call her on her premise.

Cutting taxes would raise revenue. But Pelosi and the rest of the Democrat gaggle want to raise taxes, not revenue.

Nancy Pelosi demands massive tax increases to match her previous work of massive spending increases.

Her policies are destroying the economy.

When California is reduced to trailer parks, maybe then people can afford their taxes. In Maryland, we have a governer who is trying to out do Nancy.
O’Malley is trying to take away all jurisdictional decisions from local governments and put the power in the state. Sounds like what Barack is trying to do. Except he also wants to make the 3 branches of government unequal...exexcutive comes 1st

According to Law, yes.

But;

After watching a Prez that Hawaii won’t uphold as even being legit to hold the office, what makes you think that any hare-brained dodge is beyond these people?
