Wash. teachers defy orders and continue to strike

TACOMA, Wash. — As teachers in Washington state's third-largest school district defy a judge's order and continue to strike, negotiators for the schools, the teachers union and a state mediator will meet to restart contract talks.

**SNIP**

Pierce County Superior Court Judge Bryan Chushcoff also ordered both the union and the school district to return to collective bargaining as soon as possible. A bargaining session was scheduled for Thursday afternoon, Wood said.

"I want you to all talk, even if I have to put you in a phone booth," the judge said. Chushcoff scheduled a hearing Friday to determine whether the union and the district are complying with his order.

After the ruling, union President Andy Coons said the strike was over and promised to try to inform his membership of the developments. Still, Coons said he's no dictator.

He seemed to acknowledge that teachers could still refuse to return to class, saying, "We live in a free country. People can make their choice."

What they're doing is illegal. Fire them all and start over.

Does seem pretty simple, doesn’t it. At least, it would be in a nation of laws, not men.

And with freedom comes responsibilty and consequences. Yep, they are free to defy the judge, and reap the rewards/consequences of the action.

Is the district free to fire them since they refuse to go back to work? The air traffic controller’s strike comes to mind.

Obama was talking about all the out of work teachers in his "Jobs Infomercial". Seems like if that is the case, these striking teachers would be very easy to replace with teachers that would be willing to work for a much lower salary and fewer benefits. At least that's the way it would work in the business world...

“People can make their choice.” Yep, the choice is to have a job or not.

Fine them? Just a slap on the wrist? Close that Union and throw them out and hire people who want to teach! These people don't deserve the jobs.

Nooooooooooooo, don’t say that - I live here. That being said, I hope those teachers end up losing their jobs over this - get your sorry collective union butts back in the classrooms where they belong.

I wouldn’t start by firing them, but by fining their union a daily fine until it obeys. Remember that rank and file have little say about what the union bosses choose to do. But if the union bosses tell them to strike and they refuse, they *will* be punished.

So the solution is fines. And if the union refuses to pay those fines, it is contempt of court, and the union’s officers can be put in jail, as well as placing union property in receivership.

They aren’t teaching anyway. Firing them doesn’t make much of a difference.

I guess the teachers haven’t figured out that striking during a depression doesn’t do them any good.

Libloather,

I agree with you completely. Do you think, as I do, that unions are basically legal extortion entities? They exist solely as a means to ensure that none of their members can be fired, no matter how incompetent or unproductive they are.
My brother works in the manufacturing industry, the flagship US manufacturing equipment company, actually, and says that unions basically have a stranglehold on most of their attempts to improve production of new products. Unions should be, if not illegal, as he says, but voluntary. I think illegal, but would the left ever consider it, with billions of dollars of bribe money (campaign contributions) at stake?

Lazy, good for nothing, socialist teachers and the union can all go to Hell. Fire ‘em all! Of course, government schools themselves are nothing but left wing propaganda factories, so maybe its a blessing for the kids to be missing out on their “classes”. All they learn is global warming and Johnny has 2 daddies anyway. Government schools should all be shut down.

Remember what Reagan did when 11,000 air traffic controllers went out on a wildcat strike?

That is what needs to be done here.

I have mixed feelings about this. Anyway, if the judge has any balls, he'll jail every single teacher for contempt - he has the power to do so. I'm not so sure the judge has the power to order them to work, but he certainly has the power to hold them in contempt.

Looking toward the relationship between the town and the teachers, I am 100% in agreement with your point of view. Fire them.
