Its not too difficult to tell the difference.

Perhaps part of the reason its so offensive to me is I take particular care to avoid offending foreigners I know in that same manner, as it is human nature to be somewhat more sensitive to criticism coming from 'outsiders', for want of a better term.

“Germans asking me why the US thought its legal system was any better than that of Iraq or Iran.”

That’s multiculturalism. It means “don’t be judgmental”. In fact if you had challenged this guy with instances of honor killings and suppression of free speech in these countries, he would probably say “I hate people like you”, and perhaps react violently. Multiculturalists can be very harsh in their judgments.

If the British protectorate you’re referring to is Grenada, we merely overthrew a slimy Communist dictator, Hudson Austin, who overthrew and killed the previous leader maurice Bishop (who, by the way, wasn’t exactly a choirboy himself). Most local Grenadans supported the invasion, and if Austin wasn’t given the boot, he probably would have sooner or later severed ties with London. As for the Falklands, I believe we helped you guys.

>>They called us a bunch of ‘Imperialists’....and one couldn’t understand why (at the time) questionnaires to enter the country asked: “Have you ever been a member of the Communist Party?”

Heck I’ve heard the same from US Citizens born and raised right here in the good ole USA. *And* in the week after 9/11.

Some people like us, some don’t. I try not to let it bother me, though your rejoinder sure was a good one.
