After winning key right, gays press for more from military
The Washington Times ^ | Monday, September 5, 2011 | Rowan Scarborough

With the official end of the U.S. military’s ban two weeks away, gay-rights activists are pressing the Pentagon for more than just the right to serve openly.

An underground group of gay personnel says it has won permission from at least two military branches to let it distribute its magazine, Outserve, on bases.

In addition, the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, which led a long fight in Washington to repeal the ban, has written to Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta urging him to extend military housing and other benefits to the same-sex spouses of personnel.

“Provisions in the Defense of Marriage Act and other laws prohibit the Department of Defense from extending certain benefits, such as housing and transportation allowances, to same-sex partners,” said Pentagon spokesman George Little.

“But a same-sex partner can be designated a beneficiary, for example, for life insurance. The department continues to examine benefits to determine any that may be changed to allow the service member the discretion to designate persons of their choosing as beneficiaries.”

At this point, the military does not plan to recognize same-sex marriages, citing the act signed into law by President Clinton that defines marriage as a union between one man and one woman.

Under the Obama administration, the Justice Department this year decided not to defend the law against court challenges, but the Pentagon says it plans to follow the Defense of Marriage Act.

Aubrey Sarvis, director of the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, said in his group’s August letter to Mr. Panetta that “we fully understand” that the Defense of Marriage Act prevents him from extending all benefits offered to married heterosexuals.

However, Mr. Sarvis identified 11 benefits that he says the law permits if regulations are changed, including military family housing, access to commissaries and exchanges, marriage and family counseling....

I remember guys at the Induction center on Pleasant Street in Malden dressed like they were running for Queen of Provincetown to avoid the Draft. This isn’t about serving. It’s about destroying our institutions.

DADT was the liberal compromise. Then 15 years later that was “fascisthitlerkillkillkill”. And on it continues they push and push and push, until they are teaching kids “fisting”.

Look at it like a battlefield. Basically, we set up a line, then we don’t hold that line. We go back to our comfortable lives, and they set up organizations to keep prodding at the line. Then our people forget that there ever was a line, prompted by media. Then they break the line. Then we get upset and reform a new line. And then it repeats.

You have to have organizations dedicated to monitoring the lines and rallying the trooops.

And you have to push BACK. Wars are not won defensively.

Learn from the left. They push for MORE than they want, so when we fight back, they still get what they originally wanted.

We need to push back in the other direction. Like get back to the enlightened Indian approach. Homosexuality is illegal, but decriminalized. No one is being harassed for being gay, but if they push it in society’s face, then they will be stopped.

They can ruin their own lives, but they can’t ruin EVERYONE’s lives.

You have to PUSH BACK.

That's 100% correct, and they'll get it. It would be smarter for the military to just give it to them up front and get it over with. Otherwise, it'll turn into a long series of 'the military is persecuting us for having sex in the bathroom, but where else can we go' stories.

The military may as well just admit defeat, and minimize the bleeding. Let gays move off post, and be done with the matter.

You can't get it over with. There will always be more demands. The goal is to destroy the military. They won't ask for that, though. But they will ask for a million little things which will result in the destruction of a viable military culture.

As the old story goes, "You should have stopped me at the dinner roll."

If all that happens, if you’re going to have any military at all, you’re going to have to re-institute the draft.

That’s what they want anyways, since the all-volunteer military is “too conservative.”

It'll be a cold day in the socialist workers paradise of Hades before your average 21st century 18-26 year old American will submit to being drafted.

No doubt, the leftist powers-that-be recognize that they're severely undermanned and outgunned as far as ground troops go, but this is largely a problem of their own making. Trying to enlist the legions of perma-adolescents after working so hard to neutralize them as useful members of society is the liberal warlords curse.

Actually, many of those benefits cannot be extended to opposite-sex partners who are not married (housing, etc.), so it sounds like the gays are asking for even better provisions than are allowed for nonmarried heterosexual couples.

Wrong on so many levels.

But...but....they said all they wanted was tolerance. Nothing but tolerance.

This is why our founding fathers gave them the death penalty. They knew what homosexual were even back then.
After that, some idiot got them life in prison. Again, later, another moron came along and get them into the mental asylum.
Some imbecile them out on the streets.
Now you know the rest of the story. The last three cretins should have minded their own business and let the adults handle this.

They will be pushing for a law to outlaw deployment for gays because it interferes with their government approved sexual relationships.

The viable military culture has been eradicated already, outside of combat arms and SOCOM. Most of the support structure of the military is little better than adult daycare. Of those structures, liberal social experimenting will continue at a strong clip.

Where the rubber meets the road, it's still business as usual. They'll pay lip service to the programming and roll their eyes at it as they do. Gays, women (most of whom do not make good Soldiers) and other folks not looking to kill people and break things professionally just aren't going to settle there. So, there will be some parts of the military where the old culture still runs.

Not that it matters. The military leadership is utterly compromised, and the civilian leadership far more so. We'll never win a war again under our current warfighting system, so the culture among the troops is almost irrelevant anyway.

Exactly.
I can’t imagine what these commanders are going to have to have to deal with. Every reprimand, every non promotion, every tough duty assignment etc is going to get mired in a ‘discrimination’ battle about the soldier being gay.
The amount of discrimination lawsuits have the potential to cripple our units and bases and cause serious readiness compromise.
Who doesnt think the ACLU isnt gearing up like mad for a full fledged litiginous assault on our military?

Getting an “openly homosexual” soldier in one’s unit will not be that commander’s best day.
Likely ‘these people’ will be promoted out of every unit as fast as possible.
