Rick Perry's pro-immigration Texas base
POLITICO ^ | MAGGIE HABERMAN

Posted on 09/04/2011 9:54:52 PM PDT by Tempest

POLITICO's Ken Vogel passes along an email sent by Perry contributor Norman Adams that contained a separate email from Steve Hotze, also a Perry bundler based in Texas. Both emails make donor solicitations that underscore Perry's position helping to kill a bill similar to the Arizona immigration legislation, for instance.

The upshot is that these are not necessarily positions that either primary and caucus voters know about Perry, or that will sit well with them.

As I noted in another post, it's not clear that immigration is the driver of voter interests in presidential primaries that some believe it to be. But it will be interesting to see how Perry tries to keep both his donor base of Texas businessmen, who tend to favor the immigrants who aid the state's economy, and voters happy.

I’m not saying that there aren’t folks in all 50 States who care about the Immigration issue, but the people who care most about this issue are in the border states of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. No Pubbie will carry CA anyhow and any Republican will carry the other 3 states regardless.

Are you saying there is someone still alive that doesn’t know Perry opposed an Arizona-type law for Texas? After he said so repeatedly and publicly? After it was argued and discussed for days and weeks?

That is truly hilarious. Let’s not PRETEND that we haven’t discussed this for the past week ad nauseum, so we can pretend that Perry was trying to HIDE his opposition to a texas version of the law from people. Let’s IGNORE his public statements, and say he is trying to be sneaky.

Hint: If you are going to smear a candidate by claiming he is hiding something, you should do that FIRST, and then LATER start publishing his public pronouncements about the subject. Doing it the other way just makes you look crazy.

I don’t get how someone who has only been here since 2008 gets off calling two people who have been FReepers since 1999 trolls?

Perry will not be the nominee. His candidacy has more holes than a ten-gallon hat slice of swiss cheese. It’s just a matter of time before the Tea Party casts its solemn gaze on his tenure in Texas and coughs up a furball.

Using Obama as an emotional ploy to hide the pro-illegal immigrant money that may be making it to Rick Perry reminds me of the good old days.

I used to defend Dick Nixon from the liberal media back in the 1970’s. The anger I felt towards the liberals and Democrats for going after Nixon was palpable and real.

But Mr. Nixon was guilty of covering up for his people who broke into the DNC offices at the Watergate.

The liberal media was bad and out to get Nixon, but Nixon was a crook.

Lets get all the facts on the table.

Obama is bad and evil and a politician who takes money from special interests and pays them back.

Does Rick Perry fit that description, too ????????

Both emails make donor solicitations that underscore Perry's position helping to kill a bill similar to the Arizona immigration legislation, for instance.

Here is the entire text of the 2nd e-mail, as given by the article. Could someone tell me what part had anything to do with immigration? I highlighted the part the left-wing Politico said was "problematic", but it looks like religion, not immigration:

Dear Norman,

Thank you so much for your investment of $5,000 in Governor Rick Perry's campaign for President and your help getting others to do the same.

You have taken advantage of a great opportunity to restore our nation and return it to its Constitutional foundation.

Because of your support and the other members of our team, we raised over $205,000 in investments for the Perry for President campaign. We were second in the greater Houston area and third in the state.

We are involved in a life and death struggle with the dark forces of socialism and Marxism.

Under the leadership of Rick Perry, free enterprise will once again flourish and conservative and Christian values will be revived.

With God’s help and your support I am confident that we shall be victorious in our efforts!

With much appreciation for your friendship and support, I remain, as always,

Sincerely yours,

Steven F. Hotze, M.D.
President
Conservative Republicans of Texas

Are we supposed to object to turning back Marxism now? I don't get it. Where is the immigration issue mentioned?

Maybe those folks got on in 1999 because Karl Rove or someone else wanted them to help promote the “compassionate conservative” candidate who gave us Medicare Part D and TARP.

Now they may be in the tank for Perry.

I admit that could be wrong, but we need to understand that in big time politics, all stops are pulled out and all means used to push and promote candidates.

That includes trolling into websites like FR.

The Perry onslaught for the last month on this site has been something to behold.

“Conservative Republicans of Texas” sounds like a nice title, but what does it really mean??????

An emotional fundraising letter designed to manipulate cash out of well-meaning conservative people to support causes or candidates that might not be so conservative.

Until 2009 Rick Perry spoke one way, then all of the sudden when the Tea Party came along, he started speaking a different way.

It has a Romneyesque look to it.

Here in PA a RINO state senator who voted to raise his own pay sixteen percent and voted to raise taxes ran for Congress.

His campaign ads were all about Nancy Pelosi.

Is that all you can do to promote Perry, use Obama as an emotional wedge to get us to vote for someone who looks a lot like RINO Romney, a flip flopper.

I guess Perry’s lead has gotten bigger.

Amongst ACORN Recruiters and illegal immigrant, it's huge.

The guy who wrote this letter was singing a different tune in 2008 regarding the pre-2009 Rick Perry.

Not only has Perry switched sides, the guy writing the fundraising letter has....

Interesting. Not only did the guy’s fundraising e-mail NOT mention immigration, but the guy is solidly anti-illegal-immigrant, and so would NEVER have written a fundraising article praising Perry for a pro-illegal-immigration position.

Further, you can infer by his 2007 letter you linked to that, if he still thought Perry was pro-illegal, he would never be raising money for him.

That is a very useful counter to this silly politico article that falsely claimed the guy’s e-mail was a pro-amnesty fund-raiser.

Of course, the other e-mail had nothing to do with “pro-amnesty” either. But at least it had something to do with immigration policy.
