Looters Strike in Irene-Damaged Cosey Beach
NBC Connecticut ^ | Aug 30, 2011 | Brynn Gingras

Posted on 08/30/2011 8:44:50 AM PDT by matt04

Residents of the Cosey Beach area of East Haven are dealing with the loss of their beautiful beachfront homes and their property. Now looters are adding to their hardship.

Police are lining the streets because looters are trying to steal what they can from these residents who have pretty much lost everything.

“People (are) constantly back and forth, back and forth, so we did have to get the police to tell them. I mean they’re going in houses. Yes, there’s a lot of looting,” Bernadette Davies, of East Haven, said.

This is unorganized looting which is illegal as opposed to the organized looting that government does all year, is legal, and culminates on April 15th

I remember when Hurricane Rita was poised to strike the Houston area that same year as Katrina (it actually missed us). I went to the local Carter’s Country to stock up on ammo. The place was packed. As people were having conversations, you could hear the word “looter” over and over. Obviously, we were all there stocking up on anti-looter ammo.

It goes without saying that there is no food shortage in CT. People are not suffering from exposure or dying of rampant disease. These looters are not engaged in a desperate effort to survive until help arrives.

No. CT is fine. Individuals are having trouble, sure, but the situation is not out of control in any way.

The looters are feral people trying to grab some nice stuff while they can.

If the beautiful beachfront homes are the residents' primary residences, why aren't they there defending their property from looters?

I think CT is one of those states where even if you have the means to protect your property and your life, you have to run and hide from the criminals (unless of course you're a cop).

My father in law was stuck in a shelter for disabled residents after a hurricane in Florida. A nice man was going around the shelter offering to check on people’s homes for them. It turns out that he was breaking into the homes and stealing from them. The guy was from out of state and had traveled 250 miles just to loot.

hy aren't they there defending their property from looters?

Are they permitted such action in the Connecticut Soviet Socialist Republic?

Because if it's like other areas after natural disasters hit, the "authorities" are probably keeping them from returning to their homes until it's "safe." (or until the looters have had a chance to pick over everything)

Because the police force you to leave before the storm and then won't let you back in until they've got all the power lines fixed and checked for gas leaks.

Police called a mandatory evacuation of beach front properties. At last call, my friend was not able to get back to her neighborhood yesterday - 36 hours after landfall.

I’m still struggling to come up with a legal and appropriate response when police tell me to leave my home. I won’t do it. No way, no how. I even sat around with the lights off and the car parked down the street to avoid the conflict.

‘course you ken shoot ‘em, the problem is that the cops will then spend a lot more effort in prosecuting you than they ever did on catching and prosecuting the looters.

The residents could just pretend they’re looters and walk in, since it appears the authorities have failed to secure the area.

Whether they could do anything if they were there, I don’t know.

We had a house get hit by a tornado (they think) in the Sandbridge section of Virginia Beach. Two guys were caught on camera looting the house. What did they steal? Not TV’s or computers or anything expensive. No, they raided the liquor cabinet.

Reminds you of Looter Guy, except these guys were white.
