But they won’t quit.
They’re much more likely to just vote themselves pay raises. :)
My bad, that was my response to an earlier thread that was “pulled”.. my title “ Does Congress deserve a raise” ? my response was “ blank blank” !!
Have the states pay for their own congress critter... I like it.
I’ve always thought that the first-term congressman should be paid the salary of an E-4 soldier. After that, they get to raise by one ‘rank’ every time they’re reelected.
And they don’t get a pension unless they serve for at least 20 years.
If they need a clothing or travel allowance, etc; their own state can give them that, not the fed.
If they can’t make ends meet on their salary, they don’t have to run for office. They can enter the same work force that the rest of us have to exist in. Talk about a wake-up call for people like Congressman Dingell (D-MI), who has spent his entire life on the government teat.
corrupt people are easily bought, no matter their salary
and it’s only profitable to buy a politician because they have too much control over other people’s money. take away that power and they will still be corrupt and easily bought, but it will matter a lot less.
Hmmmm .... I think I'd rather see the first term guy get paid same as an O5 officer ... then every subsequent re-election, they get demoted. I don't want to encourage the bastards to stick around.
It's the old "Lion of the Senate" types (think Ted Kennedy or Bobby Byrd) that do the real damage.
You do not have to buy or rent they can live in the office and some do. Actually it would be best if they all live in thier office then they would have only tie back to thier district and state.
LLS
Term limits do not work. It merely creates a revolving door for nameless lobbyists with no accountability to the people.
Has a congresscritter or senator EVER left office with a net worth under $1,000,000?
I don’t think so!
That depends.
How much would we have to pay them to make them go away?
I’m all for that.
In fact, I think with technology, they could web conference most bill debates and vote remotely.
I think NO also..For;
Honest, Knowledgable, Citizens who want to serve their Country to the Best of their Ability and conscience for what is best for the Country and NOT to SELL out to the highest bidder..
But once they are in - it seems their “net-worth” expands so much faster and a much greater % than even the economy.
Nancy P is from a wealthy background - I think I read she donates her gov’t salary to charity.. She just seems to make more “correct” investment decisions than the average professional investment firms..
She has financial talent.
How about we purchase a nice hotel, say the Watergate - and convert it into Congressional dorms? It would eliminate the argument about that pesky second residence, plus supply Congress with a centralized meeting place, support staff and security.
After that, I want to move Election Day to the first Tuesday after April 15th and reschedule Inauguration Day to July 4th.
Cheap wages = doing the job out of commitment, and not just for the money.
What they are PAID while IN office pales in comparison to what they get when OUT of office..
FOR THE REST OF THEIR NATURAL LIVES.......
(for doing nothing)..
Members of congress should be paid the average income of the people they represent and should send their kids to public schools and share the same types of insurance, hospitals, and retirement plans as everyone else.
True. My apartment in Crystal City (1 bedroom, all bills paid, furnished, full amenities and one block from Metro Station) was $1100/month in 2006. These people don’t need to be paid like CEOs of a Fortune500 company.
I say no. In fact each member of Congress as well as the President, Vice President, and all the Cabinet Positions would each be paid 1 Million Dollars a year.
However, if they want a staff, they pay for it out of their salary...
if they want to travel they pay for it out of their salary...
if they want healthcare, they for it out of their salary...
etc.
