Green Ideology Trumps Flood Control
The American Thinker ^ | August 17, 2011 | Joe Herring

As late as April of 2011, the Water Management Chief for the Corps of Engineers, Omaha District, expressed an opinion in an e-mail to a concerned citizen that the mountain snow melt this year would "be nothing to write home about." This internal e-mail, among many others recently released through a Freedom of Information Act request by Gannett's Washington Bureau, exposes that assertion as a gross misstatement of known facts.

The e-mails reveal that a cadre of hydrologists, engineers, and National Weather Service (NWS) officials had repeatedly warned the chief, Ms. Jody Farhat, beginning in January about the danger posed by up to 500% higher-than-normal snow pack looming in the mountains above. Multiple sources also informed the Corps that the snow had an abnormally high water content, which, combined with NWS reports of soil saturation levels of 99% in much of the Dakotas and nearly all of Montana, greatly added to the likelihood of epic flooding. Even the Corps headquarters in Washington warned Ms. Farhat about the growing danger. She dismissed their concerns.

“The way the manual is written, that’s always the target. It’s not like we have a target here or there depending on wet or dry years.”

Enviro-whackos rewrote the manual in 2006, and now use it as an excuse not to think.

"The Clinton administration threw its support behind the change, officially shifting the priorities of the Missouri River dam system from flood control, facilitation of commercial traffic, and recreation to habitat restoration, wetlands preservation, and culturally sensitive and sustainable biodiversity."

Thanks to Senator Tom Daschle [D - South Dakota] flood control by the Missouri River Dams was no longer the top priority.

"The Corps is dancing to the chanting of American Rivers, the Sierra Club, and numerous other left-of-center environmental lobbying groups, working toward "reconnecting the river to its floodplain." According to this green-trendy concept, a slow, meandering river poses no threat -- only the channelized "ditch" created by man's interference is dangerous."

The people living along the Missouri River are no longer important, it is the wacko environmentalists that control the Missouri River.

I remember hearing last winter that the snow pack was huge. I wondered at the time whether this would help replenish the shrinking Ogalala Aquifer. On the other hand, the Army Corp of Engineers has created some serious problems over the years with poorly planned levees, badly planned protection in New Orleans, and creating straight channels where before there were meandering rivers. However, to neglect planning for a heavy snow pack, is beyond stupid.

Low water on the Missouri has also been a political football.

During times of low water on the Missouri River the environmental wackos control the flow on the Mighty MO.

2009, State of Missouri Attorney General Koster files lawsuit against Corps of Engineers to stop diversion of Missouri River water upstream due to the lack of navigation and drinking water.

http://ago.mo.gov/newsreleases/2009/Koster_attempts_to_stop_Missouri_River_diversion/

Barge traffic on the Missouri was stopped due to low water. The Corps of Engineer's dams were not releasing enough water to keep the shipping channel open from St Louis to Kansas City and on to St Joesph, MO.

Thank you Sierra Club and other left wing groups for the loss of jobs.

The “ultimate irony” is the current series of dams was sold - in large part - by the economic and recreational dollar opportunities they presented !

Again, we’re seeing the havoc - economic, social and political - a small cadre (heading a minority of willing or (easily deceived/led minority of “believers”) can wreak upon decades of thoughtful taxpayer investment in infrastructure. “Today the dams, tommorrow the highways” might well be their clarion call to the “believers”. >PS

Ms. Jody Farhat -— Obviously a total incompetent affirmative action appointment. Plus she seems to be a civilian honcho within the Army Core of Engineers? Plenty of dumb guys could have messed up this situation too but she’s a failed affirmative action appointment.

People have lost millions due to this idiot.
