Perry takes lead in new Iowa poll; Update: Perry has double-digit national lead in PPP poll ?
Hot Air ^ | August 22, 2011 | Ed Morrissey

A couple of caveats are in order before we start looking at this poll. First, it comes from PPP, a Democratic pollster which has had its fair share of difficulties in sampling Republicans. It’s also early in the race, as Rick Perry just starts getting vetted and Sarah Palin hasn’t yet begun to campaign, if in fact she decides to campaign at all.

Still, this is a rather dramatic result:

The race is pretty close four ways in Iowa but Rick Perry is the new favorite among Republican voters in the state. Among announced candidates he’s at 22% to 19% for Mitt Romney, 18% for Michele Bachmann, and 16% for Ron Paul. Further back are Herman Cain at 7%, Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum at 5%, and Jon Huntsman at 3%.

If you throw Sarah Palin into the mix the numbers are pretty similar with Perry at 21%, Romney at 18%, Bachmann at 15%, Paul at 12%, and Palin registering at only 10%.

The poll shows that Perry is still weak compared to Romney
who is HIDING for the most part.

Perry might consider finally getting some traction
against Romney.

Perhaps he cannot, because they are both RINOs?

*waiting for the s-—storm from Palin supporters to ensue*

I like Palin almost as much as Perry, but she just doesn’t poll well, regardless of whether the poll is right, left, up down etc.

Her hardcore supporters don’t like polls at all - any of them.

Update II: PPP says they have a national survey coming out tomorrow that shows Rick Perry with a double-digit lead over Romney for the Republican nomination. According to their Twitter feed:

11:34 (CT): Our national GOP poll, out tomorrow, is better for Perry even than the Iowa one. Double digit lead.

11:36: Nationally, if it came down to a 2 person race: Perry 52, Romney 36. Mitt needs to try to wrap it up before it gets to that point.

11:40: More evidence Bachmann has maxed out support- down 9 to Romney, 30 to Perry in national heads to heads

More evidence that Perry could be a Romney killer. Even if the GOP samples are off, it jives with other recent polling. Please let Mittens fade away, and fast.

This poll shows he’s weak against Romney? What exactly are you on?

After a week he’s ahead in iowa and double digits nationally.

Oh and for people not wanting to believe a Democrat polster that’s fine..but RASS had Perry with a double digit national lead too. Perry could flame out....but right now his future is in his hands.

While Perry is not my favorite candidate, calling him a Romneyesque RINO is irresponsible. In fact, Perry may be the only one who can take out Mittens. If he does that early, it might result in a realignment of the supporters of other candidates around an even more conservative choice than Perry.

It's not about numbers. It's about TRIANGULATION.

Two RINOs.

RomneyCARE and PerryCARE.
Undistinguishable.

There is room for only one GOP RINO, right?
Romney and Perry both support open borders
but claim otherwise.

Both are supported (or were) by Rove.

Romney. Perry. Two RINOs.

“No RINOs”

"The poll shows that Perry is still weak compared to Romney" when it shows him in the lead?

And "Perry might consider finally getting some traction against Romney." when Perry is killing Romney in nearly every poll (including Rasmussen by double-digits) despite the fact that he was hardly known by anyone prior to last week?

You're not making any sense whatsoever... go back to posting big pictures of aircraft carriers.

Both stylistically and because of his military service, my inclination is to support this guy. I just hope that all these sexual rumors have no basis in fact.

Perry has his faults, but this is an emotional statement, not an intellectually sustainable one.

Clearly the people that conducted this poll suffer from Palin Derangement Syndrome.

It is not “emotional” to the victims from whom
freedom and right to informed consent were taken.

They are historical views into bad RINO behavior.

Austin liberals have been trying to dig up dirt on Perry for the past ten years. If there were skeletons, they'd have found them by now.
