DETROIT, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- Opponents criticized as discriminatory a measure that would forbid Michigan courts to consider "foreign laws," including Shariah, or Muslim law.
"This plan goes against our country's core values of accepting people from all races and walks of life," state Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Detroit, a Muslim, said as he joined other opponents in Detroit Tuesday.
"It's racism at its core."
Rep. Dave Agema, R-Grandville, a sponsor of the bill, has told The Detroit News it's necessary so "no foreign law shall supersede federal laws or Constitution or state laws or constitution."
Shariah applies to religious practice, conduct and family relationships.
The Michigan law doesn't name Shariah but similar measures are being considered by legislatures in 25 other states. And watchdog groups point to 50 cases nationally that religious rules could affect, most involving divorce or child custody, the News said.
Agema dismissed as "hogwash" claims of bigotry.
On Tuesday, the Michigan chapter of the Council of American-Islamic Relations said it would sue if the measure becomes law. And the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee urged members to ask legislators to oppose the measure.
Gov. Rick Snyder's office has to analyze the bill, spokeswoman Geralyn Lasher said.

Putrid bovine excrement: The US was founded as a rejection of the laws of other nations. That’s what the Revolutionary War was all about.
People we accept. If they come here legally. But we don’t want them to bring with them the laws and political philosophies we and our Constitution have rejected. Not into our courts nor into our government. What they do privately is up to them.
That statement is idiotic on its face. Our country's core value of equality before the law insists that our Constitution is the supreme law of the land and applies equally to everyone. The proposed legislation to prohibit the courts from substituting some other country's laws or the laws of a religion for our constitution and federal and state laws is in strict agreement with our country's core values.
Which has absolutely nothing to do with what constitutional rights citizens have or what laws should be recognized as valid under our legal system.

sorry, Charlie. This is America - a nation of our own established laws providing equal opportunity and legal standing to men, women and children of both sexes. Mysogeny, indenturetude and slavery aren’t allowed here. Certainly you would find it laughable for a Christian or Jew to expect Egypt or Iran, for instance, to allow their particular religious views to prevail over Sharia just because one may happen to choose to live there. America is not a tribal nation. You should have read the instructions for admission more carefully before opening the door and walking in.
The Ottomans had a treaty with Venice that allowed Christians to be Christians inside their own designated communes.
Modern India has a system where individuals have "personal law" that might be Islamic, Hindu, Christian, Buddhist, Jain or whatever ~ it governs family affairs (custody, divorce, inheritance, etc.).
There are Moslems who come to the US who have been misled by others that the United States will allow the same system here.
They are, of course, wrong.

All you need to do is demand that the courts recognize the Irish laws on abortion...
That’ll shut them up quickly.
What they refuse to admit is that they want to recognize those foreign laws that conflict with US laws they don’t like, but they do NOT want to allow foreign laws with which they disagree.
Sort of like Obama deciding which laws will be enforced and which laws won’t be enforced, turning the US from a government of laws to a government of a tyrant.
