The Big Mac has come to Bosnia.

The fast food chain arrived in downtown Sarajevo to the delight and fanfare of the young crowd that lined up to get a taste of America.

"We are becoming a part of Western Europe, of a world from which we were cut off," local politician Aner Begic, 32, old Agence France-Presse. "McDonald's is a symbol of the Western world, and I'm thrilled that Bosnia is joining it," he said.

It wasn't easy to bring the golden arches to Bosnia.

It took four years to build the McDonald's on Marshal Tito St. Politicians blame red tape, interethnic tensions, corruption and a complicated tax system for the delay.

Haven’t paid attention as to how Yugoslavia was carved up, since my 1991 visit. But McDonald’s in Belgrade had just opened up when we arrived in April, just before the war started in July.
It was expensive, but very worth it, as it was edible.
(Yugo beer sucks....)

When the Beograd McD's opened (I think 1988 or so), they had problems with the local customers sitting all night at their table, as opposed to the in/out Western model.

The management decided to not allow smoking, so that kept the locals down to 2 minutes (the longest a Serb can go without a butt).
