Mayor Bloomberg practiced his version of verbal jujitsu Wednesday, mangling a greeting to Muslim leaders at a Ramadan gathering with "shalom alaikum."
Hizzoner was shooting for "salaam alaikum" - the traditional Arabic "peace to you" greeting.
"He just got a little confused," one witness said.
Imam Omar Abunamous of the Islamic Cultural Center of New York said it was an understandable mistake for the Jewish mayor.
"Well, it's common to both religions," Abunamous said. "They are the same thing. The same idea."
The mayor frequently butchers names and words, and he often ends each press announcement with a cringeworthy pronunciation in Spanish.
His famous malapropisms include saying he "recluses" himself from decisions concerning city business that might create a conflict of interest with his company - instead of recuse.
And he routinely botches the names of celebrities and local politicians.
He once took heat for calling singer Shania Twain "SHA-na-ga Twain" and referred to country crooner Tim McGraw as "Tom McGraw."

He politely informs staffers they have dirt on their faces.
The trouble is that Bloomberg is so neurotic that he is a firm believer that “My problems are *your* problems!”
For example, he puts such huge amounts of salt on his food that guests to the governor’s mansion have described it as “inedible.” On being advised by his doctor that eating that much salt isn’t healthy for *him*, his response is to limit everyone else’s salt intake.
Likewise, he used to smoke, or maybe still does, but has been told that he should quit, as cigarettes are bad for *him*, but his response is to try and prevent *other* people from smoking.
And he is terrified of being gunned down by an assassin, so his phalanx of bodyguards are armed to the teeth, but his response is to lead a *national* campaign to ban guns for everyone else, in any way he can.
So for heaven’s sake, nobody make fun of him for saying shalom instead of salaam. His response will probably be to ban the speaking of Yiddish in New York City. Maybe to outlaw the practice of Orthodox Judaism in the city.
And hope that he never has a bad sex life. Or a problem with flatulence. “So is it true that all New Yorkers are required to wear corks?”
No surprise here, just follow the money trail to bloomies business ventures in the muslim world.
