Walnuts Are Drugs, Says FDA
The New American ^ | Thursday, 21 July 2011 10:10 | Michael Tennant

Seen any walnuts in your medicine cabinet lately? According to the Food and Drug Administration, that is precisely where you should find them. Because Diamond Foods made truthful claims about the health benefits of consuming walnuts that the FDA didn’t approve, it sent the company a letter declaring, “Your walnut products are drugs” — and “new drugs” at that — and, therefore, “they may not legally be marketed … in the United States without an approved new drug application.” The agency even threatened Diamond with “seizure” if it failed to comply.

Diamond’s transgression was to make “financial investments to educate the public and supply them with walnuts,” as William Faloon of Life Extension magazine put it. On its website and packaging, the company stated that the omega-3 fatty acids found in walnuts have been shown to have certain health benefits, including reduced risk of heart disease and some types of cancer. These claims, Faloon notes, are well supported by scientific research: “Life Extension has published 57 articles that describe the health benefits of walnuts”; and “The US National Library of Medicine database contains no fewer than 35 peer-reviewed published papers supporting a claim that ingesting walnuts improves vascular health and may reduce heart attack risk.”

No indication in the article as to when this exchange took place - wondering if this might not be the first flakes of the fallout from the cynically misnamed ‘Food Safety Modernization Act’?? (Stealth-passed and hurriedly signed into law during last year’s Lame Duck extravaganza...)

The FDA is just another rogue agency like the EPA that operates outside any meaningful legal oversight, and needs to be defunded, disbanded, and scattered to the four winds.

No. This has always been the law of the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. With some exceptions, how a product is classified is based on how it's marketed. If you make health claims, you're a drug. If you don't, you're not. Simple as that.

I hate the Obama administration more every day.

Sadly, its not just about Obama. The Dept. of Education, Energy, HHS/FDA/HUD, TSA, etc... have been around for years, just growing their roots - sometimes quickly, sometimes more slowly, but always growing. Republicans may trim them, but these bureaucracies and their staff are firmly "Progressive" in their outlook, and just wait for the likes of an Obama+Pelosi to come along to bloom.

If you follow this ridiculous logic, then everything that isn’t junk food is a “drug” because nutrients are “drugs.” Pork is an excellent source of Niacin. Does that make pork a drug. We know the benefits of Niacin.

And how about Calcium. Milk is a good source of Calcium. Calcium is an important nutrient for building bone integrity. Does that make Calcium a drug?

The folks over at FDA clearly have too much time on their hands. Guess this is the thanks we get when we complained about federal employees playing Solitaire on their computers. Now they’re going to punish us for eating healthy diets because anything that isn’t healthy is not a drug.

WARNING: If you read the entire article, you’re going to get a headache and your head might even explode.

This is some very crazy stuff!!!!

LOL... I have 3 ancient walnut trees on my property. If I continue to allow the neighbors to collect some of the nuts, will the DEA come to my house, shoot my dog, taser my wife, steal my chickens, burn my trees and take me to prison?

Will foods recommended as having healthy benefits, by Obama’s knuckle dragging wife, now be illegal??

Call me for a fix. I guess I’m a drug lord since I have a yard full of walnuts. Maybe I’ll find a corner to sell them this fall.

Whats next water?

They're already working on that.
Not FDA but EPA is poised to regulate all 'bodies of water' in the US, including ground water, which will mean everybody with a well or a drain could be hit with new regulation.
It's part of the "Clean Water Act".

They intend to make lawbreakers of all of us.
Either to strip away our rights or have us pay huge amounts for permits for every little thing.
It's a thinly disguised variation of the protection racket if you ask me.
